    Abstract: Sound signals are received by a plurality of microphones disposed on a top of an ADV. An analysis of the sound signals is performed based on a spectrum and a vibration intensity of the sound signals. A wheel which the sound signals come from and a thickness of a brake pad of the wheel is determine based on the analysis of the sound signals. A brake pad wear degree of the brake pad and how long the ADV can run with the brake pad within a safety range is determined. A warning message indicating warning information based on the brake pad wear degree is transmitted.

    Abstract: A brake is operationally coupled by gear engagement to an axle of a device, whereby turning on the brake prevents the axle from rotating. Monitoring condition of the brake includes driving the axle of the device in a first rotation direction when the brake has been turned on. The axle of the device is driven in a second rotation direction when the brake has been turned on. A first position angle of the axle of the device, which follows from driving the axle of the device in the first rotation direction, is measured. A second position angle of the axle of the device, which follows from driving the axle of the device in the second rotation direction, is measured. A clearance of the gear engagement of the brake is determined on the basis of a difference of the first and the second position angles.

    Abstract: A system can be used to indicate wear of a brake pad. The system can include a brake housing, a brake pad mechanically coupled to the brake housing, and a sensor mechanically coupled to the brake pad. The sensor can determine when the brake pad has been worn to a predetermined location by a rotating portion of a wheel. The system can also include an electronic module electrically coupled to the sensor and mechanically coupled to the brake housing. The electronic module can include a radio frequency antenna configured to wirelessly receive radio frequency energy from an external radio frequency transmitter, and an energy converter electrically coupled to the radio frequency antenna. As well, the electronic module can include an internal transmitter electrically coupled to the energy converter and the radio frequency antenna.
