Abstract: A method for humanely killing animals (2), particularly birds, includes spraying liquid CO2 into a holding site (10) housing said animals so that said CO2 is evaporated and said animals (2) are exposed to an atmosphere (3) in their holding site (10) containing gaseous CO2, asphyxiating the animals (2) by exposing them to said atmosphere (3), and discharging a mixture of a purge gas (P) and at least one sterilizing agent (A) into the holding site. A related system (1) for humanely killing animals (2), particularly birds, is also provided.
