Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of operating a touch screen controller in a device with a touch screen having force lines and sense lines. The method includes receiving touch data from the touch screen, and operating the touch screen in a self capacitance sensing mode. In the self capacitance sensing mode, which force lines have strength values indicating a potential touch to the touch screen are determined. The method also includes operating the touch screen in a mutual capacitance sensing mode, and in the mutual capacitance sensing mode, performing mutual capacitance sensing on only a subset of the force lines, with the subset of the force lines including at least those force lines indicating the potential touch to the touch screen.

Abstract: A capacitive touch matrix has first conductive row elements spaced apart from one another, and first row interconnection circuitry electrically connects the first conductive row elements. Second conductive row elements are spaced apart from one another, and second row interconnection circuitry electrically connects the second conductive row elements. First conductive column elements are positioned between two adjacent ones of the first conductive row elements, the first conductive column elements being spaced apart from one another. Second conductive column elements are positioned in a same column as the first conductive column elements and between the two adjacent ones of the first conductive row elements, the second conductive column elements being spaced apart from one another. First column interconnection circuitry electrically connects each first conductive column element, and second column interconnection circuitry electrically connects each conductive column element. The conductive elements and interconnection circuitries are coplanar with one another.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a touch screen controller including input circuitry operating a touch screen, and processing circuitry cooperating with the input circuitry to acquire mutual touch data and self touch data from the touch screen, sum values of the mutual touch data to produce mutual sums, normalize the mutual sums and the self touch data, and calculate differences between the normalized self touch data and the normalized mutual sums. The touch screen controller enters into a floating mode if a largest difference that is positive is greater than a positive difference threshold and if a smallest difference value that is negative is less than a negative difference threshold, but enters a non-floating mode if the largest difference that is positive is less than the positive difference threshold or if the smallest difference value that is negative is less than the negative difference threshold.
