Provided are a transmitting apparatus, a receiving apparatus and controlling methods thereof. The transmitting apparatus includes: at least one processor configured to implement a packet generator which generates a packet including a header and a payload based on a plurality of input packets; and a signal processor which signal-processes the generated packet, and a transmitter configured to transmit the signal-processed packet. A base field included in the header includes a first field set to a first value representing that the base field is a first length or a second value representing that the base field is a second length.

A transmitting apparatus is provided. The transmitting apparatus includes: a packet generator generating a packet including a header and a payload from an input stream including a plurality of input packets; and a signal processor signal-processing the packet, wherein the header includes a base header which includes: a first field indicating a packet type of the input packets; wherein when the first field is set to a value indicating that the packet type of the input packets is a TS packet, the base header comprises a second field indicating a number of TS packets included in the payload and a third field set to a first value indicating that the header of the packet does not comprises an additional header or a second value indicating that the header of the packet further comprises the additional header, and wherein the third field is set to the second value when TS header compression to remove at least one header of the TS packets is applied to generate the packet.

A transmitting apparatus, a receiving apparatus, and a method of signal processing are provided. The transmitting apparatus includes at least one processor configured to implement: a packet generator which generates a packet including a header and a payload, based on an input stream; and a signal processor which signal-processes the generated packet. The header includes a base header, and the base header includes various fields indicating at least one of a packet type, and a value indicating that the packet transmits one single complete input packet, a segment of an input packet, or a plurality of input packets. The fields included in the base header may also indicate presence of an additional header and a substream identifier.

At least one of the header area and the payload area includes at least one sub-area in which one or more signal fields are included. A method for generating a packet of transmitting apparatus is provided. The method includes: setting a value of a Deleted Null Packet (DNP) counter to zero; increasing the value for each deleted null packet preceding a non-null transport stream (TS) packet; and generating a packet comprising a header and a payload, wherein the header includes a DNP field, the payload includes the non-null TS packet, and the value of the DNP counter is used to set the DNP field.
