    Abstract: A method, system, and device evaluate a gemstone using a gemstone imaging and evaluation device. The method includes capturing a plurality of training images of a plurality of gemstones using an image capturing device having a plurality of different focal settings, training a machine learning module using the plurality of training images, capturing a query image of a gemstone, analyzing the query image using the trained machine learning module, identifying a selected feature of the gemstone within the query image, and outputting a notification of the identified selected feature. The system and the gemstone imaging and evaluation device implement the method.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for evaluating gemstones are disclosed. The system includes a gemstone holding case, an illumination pad and an image capturing and gemstone evaluation device. The case includes a transparent viewing window in a top wall, a translucent bottom wall and a compressible light-diffusing pad for receiving gemstones thereon. The case and pad are dimensioned such that, when closed, the viewing window presses the gemstones into the pad holding them in place and level and allowing for in situ gem imaging. The illumination pad includes embedded LEDs for selectively illuminating the portion of the pad on which the case is placed. The controllable lighting, translucent case and diffusive pad serves to evenly light the gems and reduce unwanted light thereby improving the images and analysis performed using the image capturing and gemstone evaluation device. Methods for analyzing gemstones under diffuse lighting using the system is also disclosed.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for processing a plurality of loose gemstones resting on a worksurface are disclosed. The system comprises an image capturing device for capturing an image of the plurality of loose gemstones on the worksurface. The system further comprises a computing device having a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium and a processor. Additionally, the processor is configured by executing a software application to analyze the image to detect edges of objects within the image and generate a diagram representing the detected edges of the gemstones. The processor is further configured to detect, using a trained neural network processing the image and the diagram, individual gemstones within the image and count the individual gemstones detected within the image to determine a gemstone count. The processor is also configured to perform, using an output device, a processing operation on the gemstones as a function of the gemstone count.

    Abstract: Method, system and computer program product for verification of jewelry items through evaluation of one or more images of a gemstone captured at one or more points in time. The captured images show at least the gemstone girdle. The images are analyzed to identify unique gemstone girdle physical characteristics and one or more diagrams and codes representing the unique combination of gemstone physical characteristics are generated. The gemstone images, diagrams and associated identification information can be stored by the system in a database record using block-chain techniques. Subsequently captured query images can be analyzed and compared to identify/authenticate a gemstone, detect any change in the gemstone. The system is also configured to update the database record with each gemstone verification and maintain a secure block-chain based record of all detected gemstone changes, verifications and related transactions. The system further enables various enhanced security methods and retail applications through a commerce platform.

    Abstract: A system and method selectively illuminate gems in a piece of jewelry, allowing the jewelry to be transformed into a utilitarian object as well as a decorative object. A person can wear the jewelry ornamentally, as well as use the jewelry like a watch or a touch screen. The jewelry includes a plurality of gems, a plurality of light sources, and a controller. The plurality of gems is arranged in at least one grid. Each of the light sources emits light reachable to a corresponding gem and oriented to illuminate the corresponding gem. The controller is responsive to a received input and is configured to selectively control the plurality of light sources to selectively illuminate the light sources to shine or not shine light on each of the plurality of gems. The light selectively changes an optical property of each gem corresponding to the received input.
