In order to overcome problems associated with drum cutter-loader mining machines having a cutting drum mounted at one or both ends of the machine on pivotable support arms and further having cutting drum drive motors positioned outside of the machine body, there is provided a unique support arm system for adjusting the height of the cutting drums and their associated drive motors which neither reduces the debris pass-through cross-section of the machine bridge nor impairs the height adjustability of the cutting drums. The support arm system for each cutting drum and drive motor includes a first support arm section pivotally mounted at one end thereof to an end of the machine body and a second support arm section pivotally mounted to an opposite end of the first arm section. The second support arm section carries at least the cutting drum drive motor at one end thereof and the drive motor of each support arm is positionable inside the coal seam winning track.

A continuous mining machine has a mobile body portion with a boom member pivotally secured thereto and extending forwardly therefrom. A cylindrical drum member is rotatably mounted on front of the boom member and includes a cylindrical intermediate section and a pair of end sections extending outwardly from the intermediate section. Cutting elements for dislodging material from a mine face extend from the respective drum sections. The cutting elements of the end sections are spaced from the adjacent cutting elements of the intermediate section by a pair of openings separating the intermediate section from the end sections respectively. A pair of nonrotatable housing assemblies extending forwardly from the boom member extend around the pair of openings. Each housing assembly has a tubular portion through which input shafts extend to transmit rotation to each of the end sections and therefrom by shafts extending from the end sections to the intermediate section to rotate the intermediate section. Each housing assembly has a body portion extending around the respective opening between the drum member sections and includes an outwardly projecting portion provided with tapered sidewalls that terminate in an edge portion. The housing tapered edge portions are operable to dislodge material from the mine face in front of the pair of openings between the end sections and the intermediate section so that a kerf is cut from the mine face extending along the entire length of the drum member.

In an alternative arrangement or in addition, a source of motive power is connectible to operate the clutch or clutches and control means are provided, responsive to the torque sensing device, to control connection of the power source to the clutch or clutches so as to bring about decoupling in the event of a torque overload.

A cutter drum member of a continuous mining machine is rotatably mounted on the front end of the machine. The drum member includes an intermediate section and a pair of canted end sections. Cutting elements extend from the surface of the respective drum sections and provide a continuous cutting pattern along the entire length of the drum member. Input drive shafts extend through rear openings between the adjacent ends of the intermediate section and the end sections. Rotation is transmitted from the input drive shafts through meshing bevel gears and planetary gears to rotate the intermediate section. The adjacent ends of the intermediate section and end sections include meshing gear teeth secured to the external surface of the sections so that the canted end sections are driven by the external meshing gear teeth. Passageways formed between the gear teeth on the external cylindrical surfaces of the drum sections facilitate the flow of dislodged material between the gear teeth to prevent material from accumulating between the teeth and thereby ensure positive drive to the canted end sections.

The present invention involves a machine for cutting earth formations, of the type comprising a vehicle body, a cutter drum mounted on the vehicle body, and a drive mechanism for rotating the cutter drum. The cutter drum includes a plurality of segments of a cylinder, and a connector for connecting the drum segments together. The drum segments each include at one end thereof a reaction surface inclined in a direction extending longitudinally outwardly and radially inwardly. The connector comprises a connector ring and a fastener. The connector ring includes an inner peripheral surface inclined in a direction complimentary to that of the reaction surfaces such that the connector ring is able to fit over the reaction surfaces. The fastener imposes generally longitudinally inward forces on the connector ring to urge the inner peripheral surface of the ring into wedging engagement with the reaction surfaces to urge the drum segments together.

The canted end sections are driven by gearing meshing with the bevel gears or directly from the bevel gears through a universal type joint.

Apparatus is disclosed embodying three augers in which two side augers are driven from a power source, and an intermediate auger is located between, and driven from one of, the side augers. Apparatus is also disclosed having a rigid cutting head assembly comprising three or more augers. Also disclosed is apparatus having a main gearbox connected to adjustable or removable auxiliary gearboxes, so that the apparatus can be adapted to drive one or more augers from a main gearbox. Also disclosed is an auger power system embodying two clutches the first of which, preferably a mechanical clutch, is located between the engine and the transmission and is used to disconnect the transmission from the engine to permit shifting of transmission gears, and the other of which clutches, a nonmechanical clutch such as an air clutch, is located between the transmission and the uager or augers and is used as the operating clutch.
