A steering wheel fixing construction for toy vehicles has front wheel support rod which projects beyond the upper surface of a toy body. A sleeve integral with a steering wheel is removably fitted on the projecting portion of the front wheel support rod. The portion of the upper surface of the toy body around the front wheel support rod has with a relatively narrow groove and a relatively wide groove. The sleeve has an engaging projection sized to snugly fit in the narrow groove. The engaging projection can be selectively positioned in the narrow groove or in the wide groove. If the projection is positioned in the narrow groove, the rotation of the steering wheel is inhibited. If the engaging projection if positioned in the wide groove, the rotation of the steering wheel is allowed.

A steering mechanism for self-powered vehicles and vehicles employing this mechanism are disclosed. The steering mechanism is characterized by a yoke pivotably attached to the vehicle frame which carries one of the vehicle's axles. A crown gear is provided on the axle which engages a spur gear mounted on the yoke in a position substantially perpendicular to the crown gear. The spur gear is connected through a drive train to a reversible motor. Stops are provided on the frame or yoke which hold the axle substantially parallel to the vehicle's other axle when the motor is turning in a given direction. Then the axle is positioned so that the vehicle will travel in a straight line. When the motor is reversed the stops will allow the yoke and attached axle to pivot to a postion where the axles are no longer parallel and the vehicle will turn.

A single channel continuous wave transmitter and receiver to produce a control signal to change the direction of the drive motor of a toy such as a model car having steerable wheels. A single electric motor provides the propulsion for the toy in one direction through the engagement of a planetary gear with a primary drive gear. The planetary gear is mounted on a rotatable ring surrounding the drive gear. When the direction of the motor is changed, the driver gear on the motor which is meshed with the planetary gear causes the planetary gear and ring to rotate until the planetary gear engages a secondary drive gear thereby changing the direction of travel of the vehicle. The rotational movement of the ring is also used as an actuator mechanism. This actuator mechanism is coupled to a cam that is in return coupled to the steering of the vehicle. The actuator mechanism responds to each cycle of change in direction of the drive motor, backward and then forward, to advance the cam through discrete positions thereby controlling the steering and driving force of the vehicle with one control signal.

A steering assembly particularly adapted for incorporation into a remote controlled toy car is disclosed. The steering assembly includes a pair of kingpins which fixedly mount two steered wheels of the toy car. The kingpins are pivotably mounted on axles attached to a chassis of the toy car. The kingpins are also moveable on their respective axles in a substantially vertical direction relative to the chassis of the toy car. A mechanism is provided to simultaneously pivot both kingpins about their respective axles in a proportional response to a steering input by a player so that the steered wheels of the cars are turned to a desired extent. Each kingpin is in an operative camming relationship with at least one member fixedly attached to the chassis of the toy car so that the kingpin located on the inside of a turn is caused to move downward and the other kingpin located on the outside of the turn is caused to move upward. The respective up and down motions of the kingpins which carry the wheels cause a decrease in a frictional engagement of the outside wheel with the support surface and thereby cause directional instability of the toy car in the turn.

The direction of movement of a battery-powered wheel toy such as a toy car is controlled by a remotely located, hand-held transmitter. The car has a receiver and two motors mounted thereon, one motor being connected to drive at least one wheel of a first pair of wheels located at a first axle position, and the other motor being connected to drive at least one wheel of a second pair of wheels located at a second axle position. One of the wheel pairs and driving motor are mounted for pivotal rotation about an axis normal to the plane of the support platform for the car. The transmitter sends a modulated carrier signal to the receiver. The carrier is modulated by tone bursts. The duration of the tone bursts is determined by a variable potentiometer that is controlled by the operator at the transmitter. At the receiver, the tone-modulated carrier is detected and demodulated. The duration of the demodulated tone bursts determines the time duration that current is supplied to one DC motor. The duration of the absence of a tone determines the time duration that current is supplied to the other DC motor. By thus controlling the current to the motors, their speed of rotation is controlled which causes the toy car to turn left or right, depending on which motor is rotating faster. The difference in speed of rotation of the two motors determines the turning circle radius of the toy car.

Mechanism is in turn connected to the steering bar for actuation thereof and includes a pair of rack members connection to respective ends of the mechanism. A single electric drive motor provides the propulsion for the toy car through an axle and differential acting drive wheels and is in turn coupled through a slip gear to planetary gear drive clutches which may be alternately locked by means of a pair of solenoids and associated pawls. Output gears driven by the drive clutches in turn effect movement of one or the other of the rack members to steer the car. A centering spring for the steering mechanism returns the steering to straight ahead automatically once the turn energization is completed. The slip gear also will prevent damage to the drive and steering components once steering limits are reached.
