Abstract:
In accordance with the invention, improved vacuum microtube devices are provided with arrangements for tunably spacing the gate and the cathode. Tuning can be effected by using an electrostaic or magnetic actuator to move the gate on a spring or a rail. Advantageously a feedback arrangement can be used to control the spacing. Magnetic reassembly components can be provided for facilitating release of tube components in fabrication.
Abstract:
Diode devices are disclosed in which the separation of the electrodes is set and controlled using piezo-electric, electrostrictive or magnetostrictive actuators. This avoids problems associated with electrode spacing changing or distorting as a result of heat stress. In addition it allows the operation of these devices at electrode separations which permit quantum electron tunneling between them. Pairs of electrodes whose surfaces replicate each other are also disclosed. These may be used in constructing devices with very close electrode spacings.
Abstract:
An energy conversion device includes a discharge tube which is operated in a pulsed abnormal glow discharge regime in a double ported circuit. A direct current source connected to an input port provides electrical energy to initiate emission pulses, and a current sink in the form of an electrical energy storage or utilization device connected to the output port captures at least a substantial proportion of energy released by collapse of the emission pulses.
