A gravity anchor along the bed of the body of water is coupled to the intermediate floating member via multiple cables which perferably extend angularly outwardly from the intermediate floating member. The anchoring system is provided with at least three separate and rigid rods, each of which are rotatably coupled at one end to the intermediate floating member and rotatably coupled at the other end to the floating structural body.

Semi-submersible vessels are described comprising a sealed chamber with curved surfaces, a partially immersable support structure secured to the chamber and a platform or deck carried by the support structure. Preferably the sealed chamber comprises a plurality of toroidal storage reservoirs and ballast tanks. The lower portion of the vessel formed by the closed chamber opens at its upper portion toward the support structure and at its lower portion through an opening for communication with the liquid of the environment. The vessel additionally comprises a plurality of openings in the proximity of the larger perimeter of the chamber. According to another embodiment, the concavity of the chamber is directed downwardly.

A buoyant body stabilized against both roll and heave is described in which the hull has a generally spherical surface and in which the weight of the hull and its contents is of such magnitude and is distributed so that the body floats with a predetermined portion up and so that the natural periods of both roll and heave oscillations are greater than the periods of any waves of significant height reasonably expected to be encountered in the waters where the body is deployed. Also described is the use of the body as a self-propelled off shore oil terminal into which a super tanker can discharge its entire load while remaining in deep, traffic free water.

An offshore structure, adapted for operation in an ice infested arctic environment, includes a floating caisson that can be actively heaved in the water to break ice. The caisson comprises a radially tapered upper portion, preferably conically shaped. Means for vertically moving the caisson are provided so that the upper portion of the caisson can obliquely contact ice sheets and other ice masses with sufficient dynamic force to pierce and break the ice. A plurality of mooring lines anchored to the sea floor are attached to the caisson to secure its position in the water.

There is provided a semi-submerged cargo system for the transport of cargo under ice. The system comprises a submerged vessel having navigational and cargo sections and a propulsion section; connected to a surfaced bridge, housing the crew and controls, by an ice-cutting mast. The propulsion section drives the vessel under the surface of the ice. Although the propulsion section is preferably an integral part of the vessel, it may exist as a separate tug which tows or pushes the vessel.

The apparatus includes a spar buoy comprised of an elongated column mounting a platform at its upper end, the platform carrying a helicopter pad and a movable boom for assisting the mooring of tankers to the buoy and off-loading oil to the tanker. The platform includes a ballast system providing an adjustable counterweight to the movement of the boom. The buoy is anchored and oil lines from production or control platforms or underwater oil storage tanks extend upwardly through the buoy to the boom for delivering oil to an awaiting tanker. The buoy has an anchoring collar located therealong in a manner to limit the tilt angle of the buoy within a predetermined angle and to limit the lateral excursion of the lower end of the buoy through which the oil receiving lines pass to within a specified range. The buoy is constructed to obtain a long natural period whereby the amplitude of vertical movement due to excitation forces caused by wave action is reduced.

A semi-submersible work platform comprising a deck with oppositely disposed projections extending outwardly. Twin hull members, adapted to float said deck, are transversely spaced and braced apart, and mount upright columns that are spaced and secured around the perimeter of the working deck. The hulls are rectangular in cross-section for damping motion and pointed at both ends for double-ended use in moving. Motion damping fins are mounted on said hulls and extend outwardly and parallel to the deck projections and are vertically aligned therewith. Hydrodynamically shaped stability columns are turnably mounted between each of said deck projections and associated damping fins for the triple use of reducing drag on the work platform, steering the rig while underway, and partially in controlling draft and trim thereof. Propulsion may be added to each of the stability columns at their respective lower ends.
