Upon slow operation of a loom, a feed-out motor for a warp beam or a wind-up motor for a surface roller is driven to thereby displace a cloth fell of woven fabric from a normal position toward the fabric, and upon completion of the slow operation, the motor is driven reversely to allow the cloth fell to ressume the normal position. The cloth fell is thereby prevented from being beaten by a reed while protecting woven fabric from generation of weaving bar. Suppression of the weaving bar can also be realized by varying warp tension or a one-shot weft insertion performed from a main weft inserting nozzle while causing auxiliary nozzles to previously produce jets simultaneously or in relays.

A weft insertion control system for a jet loom includes a weft yarn sensor for sensing a behavior of a forward end of an inserted weft yarn accurately, and a controlling system for controlling a weft inserting condition such as a fluid jet in accordance with the sensed behavior. The weft yarn sensor is arranged to detect at least one of the following first, second and third conditions. The first condition is a condition in which the picked weft yarn is elongated to a greatest length, and the weft forward end is farthest from a main fluid jet nozzle. The second condition is a condition in which the weft end is pulled back most by shrinkage of the weft yarn after the first condition is reached. The third condition is a condition in which the weft yarn is elongated again to a relative maximum length.

A loom having a drum type weft reservoir including a drum on which a predetermined length of a weft yarn is wound to be measured and reserved prior to weft picking. The weft reservoir is automatically prepared for loom starting by merely operating a manual switch. The local includes a clutch which is engaged at a predetermined operational phase of the loom to drive the weft reservoir. If the manual switch is actuated when the clutch is disengaged, then the clutch is engaged at a second time substantially later than the first time at which the predetermined operational phase is reached. Any cut, broken or unnecessary weft yarn remaining wound on the drum when the switch is actuated is removed during the interval between the first and second times, e.g. by pulling the weft yarn from the side of a weft inserting nozzle. The weft yarn is pulled from the weft inserting nozzle side by a device such as a picked weft yarn removing device adapted to pull the weft yarn wound on the weft reservoir drum in the direction of the weft inserting nozzle. When the second time comes, the weft reservoir is driven and a new weft yarn is wound on the weft reservoir drum for use as the weft yarn when the loom starts. The loom thus is prepared for starting merely by actuating the manual switch, regardless of the number of turns of weft yarn wound on the drum before the switch is actuated.

A retaining pin is movable between first and second positions in which it respectively permits and obstructs removal of the yarn from the drum. An automatic picking conditions regulating device regulates the picking conditions of one of the same of a picking device having a picking nozzle which picks a weft yarn by jetting a pressurized picking fluid, in order to pick a weft yarn so that the same arrives at a predetermined position at a target weft yarn arrival crankshaft angle. When the weaving conditions of the loom are changed, a picking condition, such as the pressure of the picking fluid or the jet starting crankshaft angle, is varied sequentially, the corresponding actual weft yarn arrival crankshaft angles are measured, and then the values of the controlled picking condition and the measured actual weft yarn arrival crankshaft angles are used to determine an optimum value of the picking condition for making the actual weft yarn arrival crankshaft angle coincide with the target weft yarn arrival crankshaft angle. A series of the picking condition regulating operations are carried out during the trial picking operation and/or during the normal weaving operation of the loom.

An adjustable control for weft thread delivery of an air jet weaving loom includes a system for selectively controlling the control time and the duration of master weft delivery jets in response to measurements made of weft thread delivery during the weaving process. Different types of weft threads are provided with their own master jets that are independently controllable as to duration time and/or control time. The duration and/or control time of auxiliary jets disposed along the shed of the loom are also controllable in response to detected weft motion. The system also includes a control system for the weft supply drums responsive to detected weft thread delivery during the weaving process.
