In a method of obtaining a reproduction signal with good quality from a data recording medium, two actual signals are generated as first and second signals I1 and I2 from detection signals obtained from the data recording medium. A coefficient k which has linear correlation with a tilt is calculated based on the first and second signals I1 and I2. A reproduction signal in which influence of the tilt is eliminated, is reproduced by using the coefficient k and the first and second signals I1 and I2.

A magneto-optical (MO) head has a pair of Faraday rotators between a polarizing beam splitter (PBS) and an objective lens for focusing light onto a MO disk. The pair of Faraday rotators rotate the direction of polarization of the light by 90.degree. or pass the same as it is depending on the data area where data are read by the optical head. This enables the MO head for reproducing data recorded by a land-groove technique to reduce output level difference and cross-talk between a land area and a groove area, thereby improving C/N of the reproduced signal.

The present invention provides a light-reproduction medium, data stored therein being reproduced by detecting light transmitted therethrough and/or light reflected therefrom, including (a) a substrate formed on a surface thereof with at least two recording pits having different level from the surface of the substrate, each of the recording pits having a cross-section selected from at least two different shapes, the cross-section being defined as viewed in a direction perpendicular to a direction in which the light-reproduction medium is moved relative to an optical head, and (b) a magnetic film formed on the surface of the substrate. The present invention provides high density without improving mastering technology. That is, the present invention provides a light-reproduction medium having memory density several times greater than a conventional CD-ROM without changing CD-ROM fabrication technique, driving method and an optical head structure, resulting in significantly increased capacity of an optical disc or an optical card.
