    Abstract: An inflatable device equipped with a guiding mechanism and methods of installing the inflatable device to form a temporary barrier within a gas turbine engine are provided. In one aspect, an inflatable device includes a backbone and an inflatable bladder connected thereto. The backbone is formed of a flexible and inextensible material. The inflatable bladder is formed of an expandable material. To install the inflatable device within an annular chamber of a gas turbine engine, the backbone is inserted into a first access port of the engine and is moved circumferentially around the annulus of the chamber. The backbone is retrieved through a second access port. The inflatable bladder is moved into position within the chamber by pushing the backbone into the first access port and/or pulling the backbone out of the second access port. When positioned in place, the inflatable bladder is inflated to form an annular seal.

    Abstract: A system for use in servicing a machine. The system includes a tubular body including a longitudinal axis, a tip end, a dispensing nozzle defined at the tip end, and an interior channel in flow communication with the dispensing nozzle. The tubular body is configured to be flexible. An actuator is configured to selectively modify an orientation of the tubular body, and a reservoir is in flow communication with the interior channel. The reservoir is configured to supply a maintenance fluid to the tubular body for discharge from the dispensing nozzle.

    Abstract: A seal assembly for a rotary machine is positioned between a rotating component and a stationary component of the rotary machine. The seal assembly includes a seal bearing face that opposes the rotating component and a slide device. The slide device is positioned between different fluid pressure volumes in the rotary machine. The slide device axially moves toward the rotating component responsive to pressurization of the rotary machine. The slide device includes cross-over ports and the seal bearing face includes feed ports. The feed ports extend through the seal bearing face to form an aerostatic portion of a film bearing between the seal bearing face and the rotating component. The seal bearing face and/or the rotating component is a non-planar surface that, during rotating motion of the rotating component, forms an aerodynamic portion of the film bearing between the seal bearing face and the rotating component.

    Abstract: A seal for a rotary machine includes a flexible element extending circumferentially about a rotating component and extending generally radially from a first end to a free second end. The flexible element is coupled proximate the first end for rotation with the rotating component. The seal also includes a retaining plate having a stop face that orients the flexible element at a first angle when the rotating component is operating at less than a critical speed and under the including of pressure loading, such that a clearance gap is defined between the free second end and a stationary component. The flexible element extends at substantially a second angle when the rotating component is operating at a speed greater than the critical speed, such that the flexible element forms a dynamic seal between the rotating component and the stationary component.

    Abstract: A seal assembly for a rotary machine includes plural seal segments disposed circumferentially intermediate to a stationary housing and a rotor. One or more of the seal segments includes a stator interface element, a radially oriented front cover plate, and a movably supported shoe plate. The shoe plate includes one or more labyrinth teeth forming a primary seal with the rotor, a load bearing surface radially offset from the one or more labyrinth teeth, a radial surface forming a frictionless secondary seal with the front cover plate, and one or more internal passageways configured to direct fluid through the shoe plate or through the front cover plate, and between the radial surface of the shoe plate and the front cover plate to form the frictionless secondary seal.

    Abstract: A variable ram for a blowout preventer is disclosed. The variable ram includes a ram block and a ram packer assembly disposed at least in part within the ram block. The ram packer assembly includes a plurality of inserts and a packer member. The first contact region includes a region of the body of the packer that includes a first material and a second material, layered on top of one another. The first material has an elastic modulus less than that of the second material. The second contact region includes the second material and a third material, layered on top of one another. The third material has an elastic modulus greater than that of the second material, but less than that of the first material.
