A tube bending machine is provided which includes a rotatable bend die about which the tube is bent and a rotatable clamp die disposed outwardly of said bend die and movable to secure the tube between the clamp die and the bend die. A clamp die positioning system is provided which includes a drop-away clamp die holder supporting the clamp die, a hydraulic cylinder directly attached to the die clamp holder which advances and retracts the clamp die holder, and an electro-pneumatic control system which drives the cylinder at preselected pressures. The electro-hydraulic control system includes a hydraulic pump, a directional valve which varies the direction of flow of the hydraulic fluid to the cylinder, a proportional pressure reducing valve which varies the pressure of the hydraulic fluid, and a microprocessor controller which provides control signals to set the pressure to the preselected levels. The control also includes an encoder for providing the actual position of the clamp die to the controller which monitors a following error of the clamp die. The clamp die is moved from a retracted position to a position near a clamping position at a low pressure. If the clamp die encounters an obstacle, indicated by the following error increasing to a level above a predetermined level, it is automatically returned to the retracted position. Once the clamp die is near the clamping position, the pressure is increased to a required clamping pressure for the bend and the clamp die is moved to the clamping position.

To eliminate a vertically asymmetrical deflection, a rolling mill comprises a device for measuring horizontal deflections of upper and lower work rolls 2, 3 during rolling, a device for comparing values measured on the upper and lower sides and calculating the difference therebetween, and a horizontal deflection controller four determining whether the difference exceeds a predetermined range or not and imparting a horizontal bending to at least one of the work rolls. To eliminate a transversely asymmetrical deflection, a rolling mill comprises a device for measuring horizontal deflections of at least one of the work rolls at axially spaced positions during rolling, a device for comparing values measured on at the axially spaced positions and calculating the difference therebetween, and a horizontal deflection controller for determining whether the difference exceeds a predetermined range or not and imparting a horizontal bending to the one work roll at least one of the axially spaced positions. This prevents an adverse effect by the work rolls being horizontally deflected in a vertically or transversely asymmetrical way, reduces the diameter of the work rolls, and increases the allowable rolling load. Stable rolling of high-quality strips with good shape or flatness is thus achieved.

This relates to an applied force monitor which is associated with sheet material forming mechanisms so as to determine whether sheet material is being properly formed by the amount of force applied in the formation thereof. A typical force applying member would be a cam. Suitable strain gauges are associated with the force applying member with the strain gauges being coupled in a bridge having a voltage output which is indicative of the applied force and which is directed to a microcomputer into which suitable indicia is selectively fed and such indicia will include high and low forces which would be indicative of a fault. The microcomputer includes a memory in which the faults are stored and in addition to indicating when individual faults do occur, the memory, when excess faults are determined, will serve to shut down the associated machine. Data may be visually displayed or may be permanently recorded by way of a printer.

In a positioning control device for guiding the side edges of an elongated strip at the entrance into a hot-rolled wide strip finish rolling mill train, guidance feed members are displaced transversely of the rolling direction by piston-cylinder assemblies. Appropriate displacement of the guidance feed members depends on continuously transmitted measured actual values of the strip position within the rolling train which are compared with preset required values. If the width of the strip exceeds a nominal width then large deformation of the strip side edges occurs along with axial reaction forces in the roller supports of the first rolling stand in the finish rolling mill. To avoid damage to the first rolling stand and to the strip, a pressure regulation is superimposed on the position regulation and depending on a comparison of the actual value of the measured upsetting force acting along the strip side edges with a predetermined required value, a correction-setting signal is generated for the displacement of the guidance feed members in the opening or closing direction relative to one another.

A hydraulically inflatable roll for flat rolled products is formed with a constant cross section internal fluid channel spaced uniformly from its working surface and extending spirally from end to end of the roll. The channel is connected through an end of the roll to a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure and also to a pressure transducer which in turn is connected to a display device. A proximity trigger is associated with an end of the roll so as to signal the start and the end of the circumferential travel of the channel past the contact line between roll and work when the roll is rotated, and the pressure exerted on that moving area in that interval is continuously measured and transmitted to the display device. Means are also disclosed for using that signal to control gauge and shape of the rolled product.
