Abstract: A method and information handling system (IHS) converts a globally unique identifier to an electronic data interchange document identifier. The method includes receiving a globally unique identifier and converting the globally unique identifier into 128 binary bits. The 128 binary bits are selectively separated to form groups of bits that translate to integers. Each integer is replaced with an assigned alphanumeric character selected from an alphanumeric character map to form an encoded alphanumeric string of characters for use as an electronic data interchange document identifier.

Abstract: Data to be stored in a data block for a columnar database table may be compressed according to a multi-level compression scheme. Data to be stored in the data block may be received. The data may be compressed according a column-specific compression technique to produce compressed data. The compressed data may then be compressed according to a second compression technique different than the column-specific compression technique to produce multi-level compressed data. The multi-level compressed data may be stored in the data block. When reading from the data block, multi-level compressed data may be decompressed according to the column-specific compression technique and the default compression technique applied to the data.

Abstract: Decompressing sliding window compressed data requires reference to previously decompressed character sequences. Previously decompressed data is stored in a history buffer to satisfy these ‘back references.’ As each decompressed/decoded character is emitted, it is stored in this history buffer. Thus, for each decompressed character that is emitted, the history buffer may need to be accessed at least twice—once to retrieve the backreference, and once to store the emitted character. A pipeline architecture is disclosed that stores decompressed characters in a write queue that coalesces eight or more emitted characters before they are stored in the history buffer memory. This reduces collisions between accessing the history buffer memory to retrieve the backreferences and the storing of the emitted character. This also allows the use of a single-ported memory which is less expensive than a multi-ported memory.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for maintaining data persistently in one format, but making that data available to a database server in more than one format. For example, one of the formats in which the data is made available for query processing is based on the on-disk format, while another of the formats in which the data is made available for query processing is independent of the on-disk format. Data that is in the format that is independent of the disk format may be maintained exclusively in volatile memory to reduce the overhead associated with keeping the data in sync with the on-disk format copies of the data. Selection of data to be maintained in the volatile memory may be based on various factors. Once selected the data may also be compressed to save space in the volatile memory. The compression level may depend on one or more factors that are evaluated for the selected data. The factors for the selection and compression level of data may be periodically evaluated, and based on the evaluation, the selected data may be removed from the volatile memory or its compression level changed accordingly.
