    Abstract: Data compression using a combination of content independent data compression and content dependent data compression. In one aspect, a system for compressing data comprises: a processor, and a plurality of data compression encoders wherein at least one data encoder utilizes asymmetric data compression. The processor is configured to determine one or more parameters, attributes, or values of the data within at least a portion of a data block containing either video or audio data, to select one or more data compression encoders from the plurality of data compression encoders based upon the determined one or more parameters, attributes, or values of the data and a throughput of a communications channel, and to perform data compression with the selected one or more data compression encoders on at least the portion of the data block.

    Abstract: Data to be stored in a data block for a columnar database table may be compressed according to a multi-level compression scheme. Data to be stored in the data block may be received. The data may be compressed according a column-specific compression technique to produce compressed data. The compressed data may then be compressed according to a second compression technique different than the column-specific compression technique to produce multi-level compressed data. The multi-level compressed data may be stored in the data block. When reading from the data block, multi-level compressed data may be decompressed according to the column-specific compression technique and the default compression technique applied to the data.

    Abstract: Techniques are provided for maintaining data persistently in one format, but making that data available to a database server in more than one format. For example, one of the formats in which the data is made available for query processing is based on the on-disk format, while another of the formats in which the data is made available for query processing is independent of the on-disk format. Data that is in the format that is independent of the disk format may be maintained exclusively in volatile memory to reduce the overhead associated with keeping the data in sync with the on-disk format copies of the data. Selection of data to be maintained in the volatile memory may be based on various factors. Once selected the data may also be compressed to save space in the volatile memory. The compression level may depend on one or more factors that are evaluated for the selected data. The factors for the selection and compression level of data may be periodically evaluated, and based on the evaluation, the selected data may be removed from the volatile memory or its compression level changed accordingly.

    Abstract: Apparatuses, methods, systems, and program products are disclosed for managing storage of digital content. An eligibility module determines one or more content elements that are eligible for compression. A content element is determined to be eligible for compression based on one or more characteristics of the content element. A rate module determines a compression rate for each of the one or more content elements. The compression rate comprises an amount of compression to be applied to a content element. The amount of compression to be applied to the content element is determined as a function of one or more characteristics of the content element. A compression module compresses each of the one or more eligible content elements according to the determined compression rate.
