    Abstract: An electronic device providing a smart sound mode is provided. The electronic device includes: a user command receiver; an inputter; an outputter; and a processor configured to: in response to a predetermined event occurring, provide a user interface (UI) for guiding setting of a smart sound mode; in response to the smart sound mode being selected according to a user command input through the user command receiver, individually render a first sound signal which is a common component among a plurality of channels forming the sound signal and a second sound signal which is a differential component among the plurality of channels based on whether the first sound signal comprises a voice and whether the second sound signal comprise a sound effect, mix the first and second sound signals which are rendered into a multi-channel sound signal and control the outputter to output the multi-channel sound signal.

    Abstract: An audio apparatus and an audio providing method thereof are provided. The audio providing method includes receiving an audio signal including a plurality of channels, applying an audio signal having a channel, from among the plurality of channels, giving a sense of elevation to a filter to generate a plurality of virtual audio signals to be respectively output to a plurality of speakers, applying a combination gain value and a delay value to the plurality of virtual audio signals so that the plurality of virtual audio signals respectively output through the plurality of speakers form a sound field having a plane wave, and respectively outputting the plurality of virtual audio signals, to which the combination gain value and the delay value are applied, through the plurality of speakers. The filter processes the audio signal to have a sense of elevation.

    Abstract: When a channel signal, such as a 22.2 channel signal, is rendered into a 5.1 channel signal, a three-dimensional (3D) audio may be reproduced by using a two-dimensional (2D) output channel, however, when an elevation angle of an input channel is different from a standard elevation angle, if elevation rendering parameters according to the standard elevation angle are used, distortion may occur in a sound image. In order to solve the aforementioned problem according to the related art and to prevent front-back confusion due to a surround output channel, an embodiment of the present invention provides a method of rendering an audio signal, the method including receiving a multichannel signal including a plurality of input channels to be converted to a plurality of output channels; adding a preset delay to a frontal height input channel so as to allow each of the plurality of output channels to provide a sound image having an elevation at a reference elevation angle; changing, based on the added delay, an elevation rendering parameter with respect to the frontal height input channel; and preventing front-back confusion by generating, based on the changed elevation rendering parameter, an elevation-rendered surround output channel delayed with respect to the frontal height input channel.

    Abstract: A binaural decoder for an MPEG surround stream, which decodes an MPEG surround stream into a stereo 3D signal, and a decoding method thereof. The method includes dividing a compressed audio stream and head related transfer function (HRTF) data into subbands, selecting predetermined subbands of the HRTF data divided into subbands and filtering the HRTF data to obtain the selected subbands, decoding the audio stream divided into subbands into a stream of multi-channel audio data with respect to subbands according to spatial additional information, and binaural-synthesizing the HRTF data of the selected subbands with the multi-channel audio data of corresponding subbands.

    Abstract: When the elevation of the input channel differs from the standard elevation and an elevation rendering parameter corresponding to the standard elevation is used, audio image distortion occurs. A method of rendering audio signals, according to an embodiment of the present invention, reduces the audio image distortion even when the elevation of the input channel differs from the standard elevation, comprises the steps of: receiving a multi-channel signal comprising a plurality of input channels to be converted into a plurality of output channels; obtaining elevation rendering parameters for a height input channel having a standard elevation angle so that each output channel provides an audio image having a sense of elevation; and updating the elevation rendering parameters for a height input channel having a set elevation angle other than the standard elevation angle.
