摘要: The germination of seeds is improved by treating the seeds with a solid-form super absorbent polymer that has absorbed water. Super absorbent polymer particles that contain an amount of water such as about 5 to 7 times their weight that is significantly less than the amount of water they are able to absorb such as about 80-120 times their weight and do not substantially adhere to each other are mixed with seeds to form a mixture that may contain a volume ratio of seeds to polymer particles of 0.2 to 5:1. The mixture is stirred while supplying air or gaseous oxygen into the mixture for a time and at a temperature sufficient to cause the seeds to imbibe sufficient water to enhance their vigor for sprouting, but insufficient to cause sprouting. The mixture is sieved to obtain seeds having essentially no adhering polymer residue of the particles, after which the seeds may be dried. The polymer particles may be spherical, and before absorbing water have a size of 50 to 300 .mu.m. A fine powder of hydrophobic material such as silica, calcium stearate, magnesium stearate or barium stearate may be coated on the polymer particles before or after absorbing water in an amount of 0.1 to 5 weight percent to further prevent adhesion between the particles.

摘要: A method for treating plant seed is provided comprising contacting them with a first surface of semi-permeable membrane having first and second surfaces, the second surface being in direct contact with a solution of predetermined osmotic potential, whereby the seeds abstract water from the solution through the membrane, wherein the seed and semi-permeable membrane are constantly or periodically caused to move relative to each other such as to constantly or periodically reorient the seed with respect to the first surface such that the transfer of water occurs evenly over substantially the entire surface area of the seed. For seed priming the osmotic pressure and the period for which the seeds are maintained in contact with the membrane are sufficient to allow pre-germinative metabolic processes to take place within the seeds up to a level limited to that immediately preceding radicle emergence. Methods for germinating seed and inducing desiccation tolerance in seed are also provided. Preferably the semi-permeable membrane is provided in the form of a tube of circular or polygonal cross-section which is rotated with the seeds on its inner surface and the solution retained between its outer surface and a further body to which the membrane is sealed in a watertight manner.

摘要: A device (10) for germinating seeds (S) is described. The device includes tubes (30) inside the container mounted on a base (31). The seeds are soaked in a solution (A) and then the spent solution (A1) is removed and the seeds are aerated through fluid outlet (22) with cover (23) and cover (12) open, such that air flows through the tubes (30) to the seeds through perforations (30a) in the tubes. The tubes are then removed and the device is carried to the place where the seeds are to be planted.

摘要: A method and apparatus for growing sprouts from seeds. The seeds are washed and placed in a tumbler where water and air are circulated while they are periodically tumbled. The incubated seeds are rinsed to remove hulls and ungerminated seeds and wrapped. Some seeds such as alfalfa seeds are placed in a dark room after rinsing where they are moisturized and aerated. Then they are moisturized and aerated under indirect natural light and/or grow lights until they begin to mature. They are next wrapped in a transparent cover while damp and are placed under growing lights and/or indirect natural light for final growth.

摘要: A process for determining the soundness, and the soundness-dependent germinative ability of sowing seeds is based on detecting the characteristic difference between the acoustic excitation response functions of right and damaged seeds. The seeds are excited by their impinging on a hard surface and produce an acoustic signal and by examining the response functions a comparison is performed to decide whether the seeds are right or damaged. Apparatus for carrying out the process includes a feed tank (1), a seed feeding mechanism, a sensing chamber (4) and a vibration sensor (5) for detecting acoustic signals within the chamber (4), the output of the vibration sensor (5) being connected to a signal processing unit (6).

摘要: Germinating apparatus for sprouting seeds such as bean sprouts or the like. The apparatus is comprised of a vertical arrangement of alternately stacked base members and dish members with base members forming the top and bottom members of the arrangement. The base members are formed having an imperforate top wall with a recessed portion for retaining water, and a downturned peripheral side wall flaring outwardly and terminating below the top wall. The dish members are formed having a foraminous bottom wall on which the beans are dispersed, and an upturned peripheral side wall flaring outwardly and terminating above the bottom wall. Support means are provided for maintaining the foraminous bottom wall of each dish member a preselected distance above the recessed portion of the base member immediately therebelow so that the beans can be maintained in spaced relation to the surface of the water in the recessed portion of the base member. Means for maintaining ventilation gaps around the upper periphery of each upturned peripheral side wall are provided to enable fresh air to circulate around the bean sprouts. An additional ventilation duct is formed in the bottom wall of each dish member to further enhance moist air circulation between the bean sprouts and the water on the subjacent base member. The base members and dish members respectively have similar configurations so they can be nested together for storage or other purposes.
