A hot melt process for producing a release coating. The process involves first forming a mixture of a release agent and a thermoplastic polymer in the absence of a solvent. The release agent is not completely compatible with the thermoplastic polymer. The mixture has a softening temperature ranging from about 120.degree. to about 350.degree. F. The mixture is heated to a temperature at or above its softening temperature and then coated onto at least a portion of a substrate. The coated substrate is cooled for a time and at a temperature sufficient to cause the mixture to solidify.

An apparatus and method provide for the alternate manufacture of permanent adhesive or repositional linerless labels utilizing the same equipment. Indicia is applied such as by using an intelligent imaging system by at least one print station. With repositional labels, a tie coat is applied and dried, whereas with permanent labels a barrier coating is applied. Coating stations apply a repositional adhesive and release coat in the construction of repositional adhesive labels. The coating station is followed by a dryer and chill rolls. In the construction of permanent adhesive labels a coating station for applying a release coat and a release coat curing station, as well as permanent adhesive application station, are also provided. Changeover time from the manufacture of one type of label to the other is short.

Labels with release liners, including integrated labels, are manufactured in a simple manner that does not require two webs of material. A pressure sensitive adhesive is applied (e.g. patterned coated) in a first strip on a second face of a web of label material (e.g. bond paper). Then silicone release material is applied in a second strip on the second face of the web of label material so that the second strip is adjacent, but spaced from, the first strip and substantially parallel to it, a line of demarcation (about 1-25 mm wide) provided between the first and second strips, and each strip is at least about one inch wide. Then the label material is folded (e.g. plow folded while on a Webtron press) about the line of demarcation so that the first and second strips come into face-to-face contact with each other. Then individual labels are formed from the label material by die cutting and/or slitting, each label having a first ply with a first printable face corresponding to the first face of the web from which it is ultimately formed, and a second pressure sensitive adhesive covered face corresponding to the second face of the web from which it is ultimately formed, and a second ply with a first face corresponding to the first face of the web from which it is ultimately formed and a second release material covered face corresponding to the second face of the web from which it is ultimately formed, the second faces of the plies in face-to-face engagement with each other. When integrated labels are manufactured, the matrix material is removed after die cutting.

Charged toner is transferred from an image member (such as an image cylinder or belt) to a web of imagable material (typically paper), preferably utilizing a rotating conductive impression cylinder. The toner, having a first polarity, is applied to the image member. The paper web, typically by contact with the impression cylinder, is moved into contact with the image member so that the toner transfers from the image member to the web under pressure. Even despite a high speed of movement of the web (e.g. 200 feet per minute or more), toner back scatter is substantially prevented by applying an electrical bias of the first polarity to the impression cylinder so as to impose an electric force field on the toner particles of sufficient intensity to overcome aerodynamic drag forces which would separate particles from the image areas between the impression cylinder and the image member. While the applied potential is typically between about 100-600 volts, in order to take care of all speeds and all types of toners and all types of printer geometries, a fixed potential of about 750 volts may be utilized. Where the image member is an image cylinder, a nip is provided between the cylinders at which, or immediately adjacent to, toner transfer takes place.

A common substrate mounts a repositional adhesive label and a permanent (piggyback) adhesive label while at the same time providing appliance registration information. The removable adhesive label preferably has indicia indicating appliance energy costs, while the permanent adhesive label (of paper, plastic film or metal foil) takes the place of a typically metal appliance ID tag. A release material is preferably spot coated on the top surface of the substrate, and the repositional adhesive label is applied over the release material spot coat.

A business form that is particularly suitable for use as a fishing and/or hunting license is easy to understand and use, is protected from moisture, chemicals and wear, allows for the entry of indicia that will be readable after use for a year, cannot readily be accurately photocopied, will not fade as a result of exposure to sunlight, and has a tamper-evident feature. A first quadrate ply of opaque cellulose based water resistant material is permanently attached at only a first portion to a second quadrate ply of transparent plastic material. A second adhesive pattern, applied to both cooperating faces of the first and second plies, or merely to one of the faces, releasably connects the plies together, but is adapted to receive a separable sheet, typically a hunting and/or fishing license, between the plies and to hold the fishing license in place. First indicia facilitating entry of fish caught or game shot data is imaged on the opposite face of the first ply from the second ply. Security indicia, in the form of an opaque white ink providing a pseudo mark, may be applied to the second ply to make accurate production by a photocopier difficult. The second ply is preferably polyester or polyethylene film having a UV coating. The first ply preferably comprises a cellulose sheet coated with wet strength additives which confer water dispersion resistance to the cellulose sheet. The second adhesive pattern may comprise interspersed adhesive strips on both the first and second plies, with the security indicia imaged over the adhesive on the second ply.

To prevent the areas of adhesive of the front surface on one turn from binding to the areas of adhesive on the back surface of an adjacent turn in the roll, the transverse lines of adhesion are formed of adhesive spots, and the adhesives on the front surface are contained in first longitudinal zones and the adhesives on the back surface are contained in second longitudinal zones separate from the adhesives on the front surface. This disposition may be a combined arrangement of adhesives which also prevents adhesion when the web assembly is folded in zigzag packet configuration for storage.
