Abstract: An autonomous water source for extracting water from ambient air and delivering it to a plant to support growth. The system is based on an adsorption-desorption-condensation cycle using a sorption material to extract moisture from ambient air and condensing the water vapor driven off from the sorption material by subsequent heating and followed by condensation. Liquid condensate produced in this process on the condenser is collected and delivered by gravity to a plant to reduce thermal stress and to support growth. The invention provides a sustainable source of irrigation water for agriculture and forestry, including areas where no water resources exist or are not economically viable. It can be tailored in size, and therefore, output capacity, reflecting the desired water requirements of a particular application, and can be used to replace most agricultural situations now reliant on surface water drip feed systems. The device is simple, rugged, invulnerable to rain, snow, and freezing conditions, and can be designed to last for many years without service as there are few moving parts and power required for operation is provided by sunlight.

Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for cooling a laser, such as a high average power (HAP) solid state laser (SSL). A coolant that has been heated from previous use can be conditioned by transferring heat from the coolant to a phase change medium. The conditioned coolant can then be re-used to cool the laser. In this manner, a low cost, lightweight, compact cooling system that generates comparatively quiescent flow at comparatively high flow rates can be provided.

Abstract: The present invention provides reconfigurable jet pump that is also inexpensive to fabricate. In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, a jet pump is formed as a nozzle and a diffuser attached to a standard tube or pipe T-shape fitting. Suitable T-shape fittings may have one or more joints where seals is formed by a compression/deformation of certain elements. The subject invention fulfills and important need for a jet pump that can be produced inexpensively and can be reconfigured at conform to new operating condition without the need to replace the entire unit. This feature is very important in fluid installations such as chemical plants where the physical parameters of the fluid (such as density, viscosity, bubble content, etc.) or the operating flow conditions (pressures, flow rates) are not precisely known and experimentation may be required to achieve best performance of the jet pump.

Abstract: A supercharged internal combustion engine system wherein the supercharger assembly includes an ejector pump driven by high-pressure air for pumping intake air into engine combustion chamber. Included are means for sensing engine power demand and controlling the supercharging action. A compressor and an air tank for providing high-pressure air for driving the ejector pump are also disclosed. During periods of natural aspiration the ejector pump can be by-passed to reduce flow impedance. The ejector pump can use a driving nozzle with a fixed throat or a variable throat, or a lobed nozzle. Effective supercharging is achieved even at low engine speeds. One of the objects of the invention is to obtain more power from small displacement ICE and thus providing automotive vehicles with sufficient acceleration in addition to good fuel economy.

Abstract: A supercharged internal combustion engine system wherein during periods of high power demand the weight of combustion chamber charge is increased by cooling a portion of intake air in a turboexpander using high-pressure air from a storage tank. In addition to increasing engine output power, cold air intake also reduces engine pre-ignition (knocking) thereby reducing emissions. Mechanical energy produced during expansion of high-pressure air may be used to operate a turbocompressor, which compresses intake air and further increases charge weight. Effective supercharging is achieved even at low engine speeds. One of the objects of the invention is to obtain more power from small displacement ICE and thus providing automotive vehicles with sufficient acceleration in addition to good fuel economy. Another object of the invention is to enhance turbocharged engines and reduce their response lag. Air storage tank may be recharged using energy recovered during vehicle deceleration.

Abstract: A cooling system for an internal combustion engine incorporating a heat accumulator to temporarily store heat during peak heat loads. In automotive vehicles, the heat accumulator may store excess heat generated during vehicle acceleration or hill climbing and it may dissipate stored heat during vehicle cruise, deceleration, or engine idle. The heat accumulator contains phase change material with a solid-to-liquid transition temperature higher than the normal operating temperature of the cooling system. The invention enables reducing the size and weight of engine cooling system without compromising its performance. This is particularly important for improving fuel economy and reduction of emission in automotive vehicles. In addition, the invention enables reducing the coolant inventory in the system thereby allowing for faster engine warm-up and reduced emissions of harmful pollutants during a cold engine start. The invention may be also used for thermal management of engine oil, transmission fluid, or hydraulic fluid.

Abstract: A laser system thermal management system includes a laser gain assembly and a thermal management assembly. The laser gain assembly includes a laser gain medium and may include laser pump diodes. The thermal management system includes a high pressure gas tank connected to an open-cycle Joule-Thompson refrigerator. Cooled and partially liquefied gas is introduced into a reservoir. The reservoir may be in good direct thermal contact with the laser gain assembly or via a closed loop recirculating fluid heat exchanger. The heat generated by the laser gain assembly is removed by heat exchange with the cooled gas and condensate in the reservoir either by direct thermal contact or via the recirculating heat exchanger loop. Gas evaporating in the reservoir is vented.

The plurality of mirrors may be grouped at least in pairs. A first mirror of each pair of relay mirrors may be positioned to cause a laser beam from the LGM module incident on the first mirror to be reflected to the second mirror, and the second mirror may be positioned to reflect the laser beam back to the LGM module for further amplification. The multi-pass resonator may be configured to provide a high-quality laser beam in the fundamental mode.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine system for automotive vehicle wherein liquid water is produced by cooling a portion of exhaust gases at elevated pressure to induce condensation. The use of elevated pressure allows condensation to occur at a higher dew point which is easier to realize with cooling by ambient air. Liquid water condensate is collected and provided to an electrolytic cell for electrolysis into gaseous hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen gas generated by the cell is used by the internal combustion engine to reduce internal combustion engine wear and to reduce exhaust pollutants especially during start-up. Alternate uses of the liquid water include a replenishment of engine coolant and window washing fluid.
