Abstract:
A wide dynamic range sensor employing simple sensing circuitry formed on a single chip provides accurate measurements of an incoming signal capable of varying of a wide dynamic range. Responsive to an incoming signal, the sensor generates output pulses having a frequency which is representative of a property of the incoming signal. By measuring the output pulse frequency, an accurate indication of a property of the incoming signal capable of varying over a range of 10.sup.5 or more is possible over the entire signal range. A plurality of sensors can be colocated on a single chip for providing a wide dynamic range sensor array.

A UV exposure mointoring system for measuring UV radiation impinging on an object, the system comprising apparatus for measuring incident solar UV radiation in a weighted manner corresponding to the erythemal action spectrum of human skin, whereby the accuracy of the measurements is substantially unaffected by the amgle of incidence of incoming radiation over a wide range of angles.
Abstract:
A radiation detecting array 10 has a frequency domain architecture wherein incident radiation is imaged in parallel by an array of radiation detectors 12-16. Each radiation detector has an associated amplitude to frequency conversion device 18-22 for providing output signals wherein the output of each photodetector is represented as a frequency within a uniquely identified band of frequencies, the specific frequency being a function of the output signal amplitude of the photodetector. The readout of one or more selected detectors is accomplished by providing a swept frequency band or bands associated with the desired detector or detectors and mixing the detector frequencies with the swept band. The frequency representing the photodetector output may be input directly to a low dispersion transmission line 30. The unit cells may include radiation detectors comprised of superconducting material and also superconducting components that inherently manifest current or voltage to frequency conversion characteristics in accordance with the Josepson effect. An array having high temperature superconducting components includes photodetectors 60, associated voltage to frequency convertors 64 and a transmission line 70 integrated upon a common substrate.

A photometric circuit comprises a switching circuit which causes a photo conductive element which responds to the luminance of an object of measurement to be selectively connected with an oscillation circuit so that the photo conductive element functions as a frequency determining element and a frequency ratio calculating circuit which calculates a ratio of the oscillation frequency obtained when the photo conductive element is in connection with the oscillation circuit to the oscillation frequency obtained when the photo conductive element is not connected with the oscillation circuit. Thus, it is possible to reduce the required capacitance of the capacitor operating as a frequency determining element, lower the voltage required to drive the circuit and yet achieve high measuring accuracy.
Abstract:
An improved electro-optical detection system is disclosed capable of use in a fluorescent polarization instrument. In a single or dual channel system, an integrated photodetector/amplifier is combined with a linear charge-balancing voltage-to-frequency converter to produce a digital frequency indicative of the intensity of polarized fluorescence emmited by a chemically treated body fluid sample, such as blood, upon light excitation thereof. A chopper-stabilized amplifier is further connected to the input of the voltage-to-frequency converter for automatically correcting input offset currents and temperature drift. The digital frequency is counted and the data corresponding thereto is transferred via bus connection to a microcomputer for evaluation and display.
