摘要:
Filter cigarettes which are transported sideways at the periphery of a rotating drum-shaped conveyor are engaged by successive rolling surfaces of a pair of coaxial rotary rolling members which rotate at the peripheral speed of the conveyor but in the opposite direction so that the cigarettes are caused to roll about their respective axes and cease to advance with the conveyor. The periphery of the conveyor is formed with flutes which receive the freshly rolled cigarettes, and the rolling of cigarettes is abruptly terminated by arresting members which orbit adjacent the path of movement of the cigarettes at the peripheral speed of the conveyor and in the same direction. A laser is used to make holes in successive cigarettes while the cigarettes roll about their respective axes.

A device for piercing holes in rod-shaped items particularly cigarettes, on which the items are housed inside respective recesses mounted so as to rotate around their own axes on a conveyor moving cross wise in relation to the recesses. A focusing lens is associated with each respective recess. When the conveyor is operated, the focusing lenses are struck successively by a pulsating laser beam and reflected by a reflecting device located between the laser source and the route travelled by the focusing lenses. The beam is then focused by the focusing lenses on to the periphery of the relative items as they turn.

The making of perforations in the tubular envelopes of finished filter cigarettes or analogous rod-shaped smokers' products for the purpose of admitting cool atmospheric air into the column of tobacco smoke is regulated automatically in dependency on one or more variable parameters including the resistance of the rod-like filler of a product to axial flow of a gaseous fluid therethrough, the permeability of the entire tubular envelope, the resistance which the entire filler or the tobacco filler of a filter cigarette offers to axial or transverse flow of a gaseous fluid or to penetration of corpuscular radiation across successive increments of the filler, the resistance which successive increments of a web of cigarette paper offer to the penetration of air or light therethrough, and/or the quantity of tobacco particles in the smokers' products. The perforations are formed by laser beams, and the regulating step includes changing the intensity of laser beams and/or the length of intervals of impingement of laser beams upon the envelopes.

A cigarillo splitter operable to create a row of apertures in the external wrap of a cigarillo in order to facilitate the splitting of the external wrap. The cigarillo splitter further includes a first plate member and a second plate member that are rectangular in shape and of the same size. The first plate member and second plate member are hingedly attached wherein the first plate member has a first position and a second position. The first plate member includes a plurality of pins oriented in a row extending the length of the first plate member. A groove is formed in the second plate member and is in axial alignment with the plurality of pins. A spacer is secured intermediate the first plate member and second plate member to ensure a parallel orientation when the first plate member is in its second position.

A novel cigar is provided with an elongated cigar puller device which extends into the interior of the cigar. By removing the cigar puller from the cigar, the tobacco fill material of the cigar is disrupted so as to improve the draw of the cigar. Once the cigar puller is removed from the tobacco fill material, a flavorant and/or aromatic can be infused into the less dense tobacco fill material which is provided upon the removal of the cigar puller.

The invention relates to a method of and to an apparatus for perforating the tubular wrappers of plain or filter cigarettes and other rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry. The articles are advanced sideways at the periphery of a rotary drum-shaped carrier which cooperates with a device serving to roll them about their longitudinal axes while the wrappers are being perforated by one or more pulsating beams issuing from one or more lasers and passing through a stationary cylinder lens on their way to the facets of a rotating cylindrical mirror which directs the beam(s) across the axis of the carrier and pivots the beam(s) about such axis on its or their way radially outwardly of the carrier toward a first set of stationary deflecting mirrors. These mirrors deflect the beam(s) in at least substantial parallelism with the axis of the carrier at locations radially outwardly of the latter's periphery toward a second set of deflecting mirrors which, in turn, direct the beam(s) substantially radially toward the axis of the carrier and against spherical lenses which focus the beam(s) upon the wrappers of the articles.

An method for increasing the permeability of tubular wrappers of a succession of cigarettes by at least one pulsed beam of coherent radiation issuing from a laser has a hollow drum-shaped conveyor cooperating with a rolling member to define an arcuate channel wherein successive cigarettes roll while advancing sideways past a perforating station. Each beam of coherent radiation is generated in or is caused to enter the interior of the conveyor prior to being influenced by one or more deflecting and/or focussing elements to be propagated substantially radially and through an opening of the hollow conveyor and to impinge upon the wrapper of a cigarette rolling at the perforating station.

Filter cigarettes of unit or multiple unit length are produced in a tipping machine wherein successive groups of coaxial plain cigarettes and filter rod sections are caused to roll within a channel bounded by surfaces at least one of which moves relative to the other(s). This results in the conversion of uniting bands, which are carried by successive groups into the inlet of the channel, into tubular sleeves connecting the tubular wrapper(s) of the filter rod section(s) to the plain cigarette(s) of the respective group. The wrappers, and normally also the uniting bands, are perforated in the channel subsequent to, or in part simultaneously with, the conversion of uniting bands into the respective sleeves. Each filter cigarette can be provided with one or more arrays, such as annuli, of perforations, e.g., by mutually inclined laser beams. Rolling movements of successive groups can be accelerated in several stages during and subsequent to entry into the channel, and this also applies for the deceleration of rolling movement ahead of, at and downstream of the outlet of the channel.

Apparatus for imparting rotary and sidewise movements to receptacles for cigarettes has a rotary conveyor carrying pairs of levers pivotable about discrete axes which are parallel to and surround the axis of the conveyor. One lever of each pair is pivotable about the respective discrete axis relative to the conveyor under the action of a stationary cam which is tracked by a follower on the lever, and each pair of levers carries two shafts for a receptacle. The shafts are caused to turn the respective receptacles through at least 360.degree. while the receptacles are located at a perforating station where the wrappers of the cigarettes therein are perforated by a stationary laser; at such time, the cam causes the corresponding pair of levers to pivot their receptacles counter to the direction of rotation of the conveyor so that the cigarettes are held against orbital movement while the respective receptacles are being rotated by gear trains installed in selected levers and receiving motion from pivots for such levers.

Fragments of plastic fibers, such as cellulose acetate fibers, forming part of mouthpieces of filter cigarettes or like rod-shaped smokers' products tend to become separated from the respective filter mouthpieces at the end faces which develop in response to the making of cuts across filter rod sections of double unit length between pairs of plain cigarettes to obtain filter cigarettes of unit length. The fragments of fibers which tend to become separated and to contaminate the area around the filter cigarette making machine are either bonded (e.g., by heat and/or by a solvent) to the respective mouthpieces, or are removed by suction and/or by resorting to electrostatic precipitation. It is also contemplated to cause smoke-permeable layers of filter material to overlie the end faces of the mouthpieces.
