This application provides a method for transformation of cells of plant tissues and the regeneration of these cells and tissues into mature transgenic plants. The apical meristematic region of a plant seedling are isolated, then treated to slow the metabolic activity of the isolated tissue. The tissue is then exposed to a transforming agent such as a DNA plasmid or an Agrobacterium carrying a plasmid vector which contains a DNA encoding a gene of interest. After an appropriate incubation period, the treatment is reversed, allowing the metabolic activity of the apical meristematic tissues to return to normal. The method provides a larger population of receptive cells for exposure to the transforming agents, thereby providing higher probabilities of isolating transformed tissues which can be regenerated into transformed plants.

Fibrous material such as cotton cloth is simultaneously rendered flame retardant and imparted improved dimensional stability by treating the material with cyanamide and at least one phosphonic acid represented by the structural formula:

Durability of the flame retardancy to repeated hard water washing may be improved through a subsequent treatment with additional cyanamide, with N-methylol compounds, or by methylation with diazomethane. Durable press properties of cellulosic textiles are also improved by the subsequent treatment with additional cyanamide. A particularly high degree of flame retardancy is imparted to mercerized cotton cloth.

THE FLAME RETARDANT PROPERTIES OF TEXTILE MATERIALS WHICH HAVE BEEN REACTED WITH PHOSPHORUS-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS OR SALTS THEREOF, ARE IMPROVED BY AN AFTER-TREATMENT OF THE TEXTILE MATERIAL WITH A SALT OF A HEAVY METAL, FOR EXAMPLE, TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDE. THE TREATMENT NOT ONLY IMPARTS INCREASED FLAME RETARDANCE TO TREATED TEXTILE MATERIALS BUT PROTECTS THE IMPARTED FLAME RETARDANCE AGAINST SUBSEQUENT IMPAIRMENT BY ION EXCHANGE WITH CALCIUM AND OTHER ELEMENTS IN WATER. CONSEQUENTLY, THE TREATMENT EXTENDS THE EFFECTIVE LIFE OF FLAME RETARDANCE OVER A LARGE NUMBER OF LAUNDERINGS. Creaseproofing resins are rapidly and continuously wet fixed on a fiber system such as a cotton fabric, for use in the production of durable press articles. In this process, a bath containing a mixture of polymer forming and crosslinking agents and an acid catalyst is applied to the cellulosic fiber system; the wet swollen fibers are heated and held under highly humid or substantially non-evaporative, hot conditions, e.g., in steam between about 100* and about 140* C., for only from about 10 to about 90 seconds so that at least about 3 percent of polymer forming resin becomes wet fixed thereon; and the system is then promptly cooled to quench the polymerization reaction as well as minimize resin hydrolysis. Preferably, the steamed fabric is neutralized, washed and dried under mild conditions. If the catalyst is thus removed, a latent curing catalyst is applied to such a fabric before it is made into garments or other articles and dry cured to impart durable press properties thereto. Instead of applying a latent catalyst to the fabric prior to garment fabrication, it is possible to apply an appropriate curing catalyst at a later stage, as by introducing it directly into the vapor space of the curing chamber.

A seed planter with means for injecting liquid solutions into the soil while planting the seeds. The implement includes a frame which is adapted to be mounted behind a tractor. A hopper is mounted on the frame and a shank extends downwardly from the hopper to support a sweep at the lower end of the shank. The sweep is wedge shaped at the forward end and has an opening provided at the rearward end. A spray nozzle is mounted inside the sweep and positioned to spray a liquid solution rearwardly through the opening. A seed trench is formed by a runner opener at the lower end of the shank in front of the sweep. A seed guide extends downwardly through the interior of the shank and is aligned with an opening in the bottom of the sweep behind the opener. Tines along the rearward portion of the sweep above the opening allow increased penetration of the spray from the nozzle into the soil. Flanges on the bottom of the sweep close and compact the soil over the seed. A gauge wheel on the implement frame meters the supply of seeds from the hopper. A liquid storage container may be mounted on the frame and connected with a conduit extending through the shank to supply liquid to the nozzle in the sweep.
