    Abstract: A method of reproducing a multi-channel audio signal including an elevation sound signal in a horizontal layout environment is provided, thereby obtaining a rendering parameter according to a rendering type and configuring a down-mix matrix, and thus effective rendering performance may be obtained with respect to an audio signal that is not suitable for applying virtual rendering. A method of rendering an audio signal includes receiving a multi-channel signal includes a plurality of input channels to be converted into a plurality of output channels; determining a rendering type for elevation rendering based on a parameter determined from a characteristic of the multi-channel signal; and rendering at least one height input channel according to the determined rendering type, wherein the parameter is included in a bitstream of the multi-channel signal.

    Abstract: When a multi-channel signal, such as from a 22.2 channel, is rendered to a 5.1 channel, three-dimensional audio signals can be reproduced by means of a two-dimensional output channel. However, when the elevation of the input channel differs from the standard elevation and an elevation rendering parameter corresponding to the standard elevation is used, audio image distortion occurs. The present invention resolves the described issue in the existing technology, and a method of rendering audio signals, according to an embodiment of the present invention, which reduces the audio image distortion even when the elevation of the input channel differs from the standard elevation, comprises the steps of: receiving a multi-channel signal comprising a plurality of input channels to be converted into a plurality of output channels; obtaining elevation rendering parameters for a height input channel having a standard elevation angle so that each output channel provides an audio image having a sense of elevation; and updating the elevation rendering parameters for a height input channel having a set elevation angle other than the standard elevation angle.

    Abstract: In cases of rendering a multichannel signal such as a 22.2 channel signal as a 5.1 channel signal, a three dimensional (3D) audio signal may be reproduced using a two dimensional (2D) output channel, but rendered audio signals are sensitively affected by a layout of speakers and may cause distortion of a sound image when the layout of arranged speakers is different from a standard layout. The present invention may solve the aforementioned problem of the prior art. The audio signal rendering method for reducing distortion of a sound image even when the layout of the arranged speakers is different from the standard layout, according to one embodiment of the present invention, includes: receiving a multi-channel signal including a plurality of input channels that are to be converted to a plurality of output channels; obtaining deviation information about at least one output channel, from a location of a speaker and a standard location corresponding to each of the plurality of output channels; and modifying a panning gain from a height channel included in the plurality of input channels to the output channel having the deviation information, based on obtained deviation information.
