A water-based ink for ink-jet recording enables the expression of sharp text and lines in high density black, and the formation of a high quality gradation image in which the graininess is reduced in a black image of medium to high lightness. The inks include a color ink (A) and a color ink (B) each of which independently has a lightness index L* according to the L* a* b* calorimetric system of about 60 or less. The color ink (A) and the color ink (B) satisfy the following expression (I): about 120°≦|α−β| about ≦240° (I) wherein α is the hue angle of the color ink (A) and β is the hue angle of the color ink (B). The chroma C* of a hue obtained by the combination of the color ink (A) and the color ink (B) is about 30 or less.

A water base ink for ink-jet recording includes carbon black as a coloring agent and water. The content of chlorine ion contained in the ink is not more than 8 ppm. The ink may be added with 1,2,3-benzotriazole as a rustproofing agent. Even when oxygen is contained in an amount of about 9 ppm in the ink, the corrosion of a discharge section, which would be otherwise caused by chlorine ion, can be avoided even in the case of the use for a printer which uses a metal member for the discharge section.

A water base pigment ink for ink-jet recording contains a pigment, a propylene glycol derivative which has a saturation vapor pressure of 2 to 10 hPa and an octanol-water distribution coefficient log P of 0 to 1.35, and dipropylene glycol-n-propyl ether. The propylene glycol derivative is contained in the ink by 0.25 to 1.5% by weight, and the dipropylene glycol-n-propyl ether is contained in the ink by 0.5 to 1% by weight. The ink is excellent in the paper surface drying performance. Further, it is possible to avoid the occurrence of the feathering and the blank stripes in letters.

There is provided a water-based ink for ink-jet recording including a self-dispersible carbon black modified by carboxylic acid group, a water, and a water-soluble organic solvent, wherein a weight concentration of phosphate ion in the water-based ink is not more than 35 ppm. The water-based ink for ink-jet recording has excellent water resistance and is capable of lowering or preventing corrosion of a metal member, in an ink-jet recording apparatus, contacting with the water-based ink for ink-jet recording.

An incubated state evaluating device includes an image reading unit, a feature value calculating unit, a frequency distribution calculating unit, and an evaluation information generating unit. The image reading unit reads a plurality of images in which a plurality of cells incubated in an incubation container are image-captured in time series. The feature value calculating unit obtains each of feature values representing morphological features of cells from the images for each of the cells included in the images. The frequency distribution calculating unit obtains each of frequency distributions of the feature values corresponding to the respective images. The evaluation information generating unit generates evaluation information evaluating an incubated state of cells in the incubation container based on a variation of the frequency distributions between images.

A printer comprises a fixed line type first head, a serial type second head, an ink cartridge which stores an ink to be supplied to the first and second heads, a first cap which is to be installed to the first head, and a second cap which is to be installed to the second head. The ink cartridge and the first and second heads are connected in series in this order by using tubes. Accordingly, it is possible to shorten the lengths of the tubes. The serial type head, in which the drying is hardly caused from a nozzle and the influence is exerted to a small extent on the jetting performance when any viscosity-increased liquid and/or bubbles is/are supplied, is arranged on the downstream side. Accordingly, it is possible to decrease the frequency of the recovery operation.

A water base ink for ink-jet recording contains self-dispersible carbon black as a coloring agent. The total content of an organic acid having a number of carbon or carbons of 1 to 6 and a salt of the organic acid is not more than 400 ppm. The organic acid having a number of carbon or carbons of 1 to 6 includes monocarboxylic acid, dicarboxylic acid and oxy acid, and the salt of the organic acid includes salts of these acids. When the water base ink is used in an ink-jet recording apparatus, the discharge stability of the ink is improved.
