Abstract: The present disclosure describes apparatuses and techniques of adaptive PLMN management for varying network conditions. In some aspects, a PLMN manager of a user equipment (UE) searches, as part of a registration procedure, a data repository of PLMN information that includes a PLMN blocked from registration for a duration of time and determines that the PLMN is blocked due to a signal-related condition with a cell of the PLMN (e.g., weak signal). The PLMN manager then determines, during the duration of time, that the signal-related condition between the UE and the cell has improved. In response to the improvement, the PLMN manager unblocks the PLMN before expiration of the duration of time. By so doing, the UE may reattempt registration with the unblocked PLMN at least once before the duration of time expires, which may allow the UE to register more quickly and reestablish network services.

Abstract: A user equipment includes a radio frequency (RF) modem configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one mobile network operator and a wireless local area network (WLAN) modem configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one WLAN access point. The user equipment further includes a processor coupled to the RF modem and the WLAN modem and at least one memory storing executable instructions. The executable instructions are configured to manipulate at least one of the processor and the RF modem to establish a first cellular connection with a first mobile network operator based on a first subscription represented by a first subscriber identity, and virtualize the first cellular connection as a wireless local area network (WLAN) connection for use by one or more processes executed by the processor for a second subscription represented by a second subscriber identity.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods related to acquiring service on mobile computing devices (MCDs) are provided. An MCD can determine whether the MCD is connected to a wireless network. After determining that the MCD is not connected to the wireless network, the MCD can determine a scanning context that includes a mobility attribute and/or a location attribute. Based on the scanning context, the MCD can determine frequencies associated with the wireless network and scanning rates for scanning the frequencies, where each frequency can be associated with a respective scanning rate. The MCD can scan one or more of the frequencies at one or more respective scanning rates for a signal that enables the MCD to attempt connection with the wireless network.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods related to acquiring service on mobile computing devices (MCDs) are provided. A method includes determining a decreasing sequence of scan ratios, each scan ratio indicating a proportion of time over which a MCD scans one or more frequencies to attempt connection with a wireless network during a disconnected time window. The method further includes determining a connected time window′ when the MCD is connected to the wireless network. The method additionally includes determining a ping-pong rate for the MCD based at least on a duration of the connected time window. The method also includes selecting a scan ratio from the decreasing sequence of scan ratios based on the ping-pong rate. The method further includes scanning the one or more frequencies in accordance with the decreasing sequence of scan ratios and starting from the selected scan ratio to cause the MCD to attempt connection with the wireless network.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) reduces power consumption by selectively disconnecting from a radio access network (RAN) while in a non-standalone (NSA) mode in response to detecting a threshold number of communication failures associated with the RAN. The UE connects to a core network in the NSA mode via both a 4G RAN and a 5G RAN. The UE monitors the connection with the 5G RAN for communication failures, such as Random Access Channel (RACH) failures, radio link failures (RLFs), and the like. In response to the number of detected failures exceeding a threshold, the UE can determine that the quality of the connection with the 5G RAN is providing relatively little benefit and can terminate the connection with the 5G RAN.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes apparatuses and methods directed to adaptive connection management for marginal network conditions. In some aspects, a connection manager (118) of a user equipment device (102) measures one or more signal-related characteristics of a cellular network (104) that include signal strength of a connection (112-116) available through a base station (106-110) of the cellular network. The connection manager (118) can determine, based on the one or more signal-related characteristics, that the connection (112-116) available through the base station (106-110) of the cellular network (104) is marginal or likely unreliable. In response to this determination, the connection manager (118) can alter connection parameters of the user equipment device (102) effective to mitigate effects associated with attempting to connect or use the marginal connection. In some cases, the user equipment device (102) is prevented from acquiring the marginal connection, which reduces signaling overhead or retransmissions effective to conserve power of the user equipment device (102).
