Abstract: A method is provided in one example embodiment and may include ranking a plurality of downlink control information (DCI) messages according to a first rank criterion; ranking a plurality of allowable resource sets for each ranked DCI message according to a second rank criterion; and allocating resources for each ranked DCI message based, at least in part, on whether particular resources, which are to be allocated for a particular ranked DCI message, are collided, at least in part, with previously allocated resources for one or more other DCI messages.

Abstract: A distributed controller of local radio resources implements a hybrid FFR system. The distributed controller provides user channel information to a central controller of regional radio resources. The distributed controller also obtains an FFR plan from the central controller. The FFR plan designates for an access point associated with the distributed controller, a central frequency band, an edge frequency band, and a distribution of user devices connected to the access point. The distribution indicates whether each user device communicates with the access point via the central frequency band or via the edge frequency band. The distributed controller provisions the access pint to connect to the user devices according to the FFR plan, and adjusts the distribution of user devices locally based on a change in the user channel information.

Abstract: Embodiments herein describe a network device (e.g., an access point) that dynamically arranges multi-user (MU) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) compatible client devices into MU-MIMO groups. That is, the network device uses network metrics and historical data to change the assignment of client devices in the MU-MIMO groups which may improve MU-MIMO efficiency by reducing the amount of power that leaks between the clients devices in the group. In one embodiment, the AP identifies a MU-MIMO group based on a performance evaluation such as evaluating network metric or determining if the group is underutilized. The AP can replace the identified MU-MIMO group with a substitute MU-MIMO group where the substitute MU-MIMO group is selected based on historical data corresponding to the client devices assigned to the substitute MU-MIMO group.

Abstract: An example method is provided in one example embodiment and includes receiving performance metric information from a plurality of small cell radios, wherein the performance metric information includes, at least in part, a number of user equipment that are to be scheduled on a first type and a second type of subframes for each small cell radio; determining resource allocation parameters for the plurality of small cell radios; exchanging interference information between two or more small cell radios of the plurality of small cell radios that includes an indication of whether a particular small cell radio is interfering with or is interfered by another small cell radio of the two or more small cell radios; and scheduling downlink resource transmissions on the first type and the second type of subframes for user equipment served by the two or more small cell radios.
