    Abstract: An online concierge system generates an item graph connecting item nodes with attribute nodes of the items. Example attributes include a brand, a category, a department, or any other suitable information about the item. When the online concierge system receives a search query to identify one or more items from a customer, the online concierge system parses the search query into combinations of terms and identifies item nodes and attribute nodes related to the search query. The online concierge system identifies item nodes and attribute nodes that are likely to result in a conversion. Information about the identified nodes is presented to the customer. The customer may select an item node to purchase the item, or an attribute node to execute a new search query based on terms associated with the attribute node.

    Abstract: An online concierge system uses a model to predict a user's interaction with an item, based on a user embedding for the user and an item embedding for the item. For the model to account for more recent interactions by users with items without retraining the model, the online concierge system generates updated item embeddings and updated user embeddings that account for the recent interactions by users with items. The online concierge system compares performance of the model using the updated item embeddings and the updated user embeddings relative to performance of the model using the existing item embeddings and user embeddings. If the performance of the model decreases, the online concierge system adjusts the updated user embeddings and the updated item embeddings based on the change in performance of the model. The adjusted updated user embeddings and adjusted updated item embeddings are stored for use by the model.

    Abstract: An online concierge system improves on methods for presenting content to users. The online concierge system generates a user embedding for a user and recipe embeddings for candidate recipes. The online concierge system generates a context embedding by applying a context embedding model to context data received from a user mobile application. The online concierge system calculates an overall score for each candidate recipe based on a user score and a context score. The user score is calculated based on the user embedding and a recipe embedding for the candidate recipe. The context score is calculated based on the generated context embedding and the recipe embedding for the candidate recipe. The online system selects a recipe for presentation to the user based on the overall scores. The online concierge system trains the context embedding model using a loss function that is based on the user score and the context score.

    Abstract: An online concierge system determines an emotion of a user from inputs received from the user and other contextual information about a user to select items to identify to the user for an order. The online concierge system logs historical data about items included in orders by the user and corresponding emotions of the user and contextual information for the user when the items were included in orders. Subsequently, when the user requests to create an order, the online concierge system determines an emotion for the user and contextual information for the user and selects one or more items included in prior orders when the user had the same emotion and had similar contextual information. The online concierge system transmits information describing one or more of the selected items to a client device of the user for presentation.

    Abstract: An online concierge shopping system identifies recipes to users to encourage them to include items from the recipes in orders. The online concierge system generates a recipe vector for each recipe based on items included in a recipe. A dimension of a recipe vector identifies an item included in a corresponding recipe and may include an importance score of the item to the recipe. The importance score of an item to a recipe is based on a term frequency of the item in the recipe and an inverse document frequency of the item across multiple recipes. The online concierge system determines overlap between items in recipe vectors an order vector generated from items included in an order from a user and selects a recipe for the user based on overlapping items in the recipe vector and in the order vector.

    Abstract: A barcode decoding system decodes item identifiers from images of barcodes. The barcode decoding system receives an image of a barcode and rotates the image to a pre-determined orientation. The barcode decoding system also may segment the barcode image to emphasize the portions of the image that correspond to the barcode. The barcode decoding system generates a binary sequence representation of the item identifier encoded in the barcode by applying a barcode classifier model to the barcode image, and decodes the item identifier from the barcode based on the binary sequence representation.
