A safety ski binding having a jaw for holding a boot on a ski and permitting lateral release of the boot, an elastic system for biasing the jaw longitudinally forward against lateral pivoting, and a mechanism for compensating for the additional bias against lateral pivoting arising from friction between the boot and the ski during a forward fall. The compensation means includes a sensor which produces a force on the jaw which opposes the bias of the elastic system, in response to downward movement of the boot. The sensor includes a pedal and a reversing lever. The boot rests on the pedal and the pedal pivots around an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the ski when the pedal is pushed downward by the boot. The reversing lever is in contact with the pedal and pivots in the opposite direction from the pedal when the pedal pivots. An anterior arm of the reversing lever rests on a vertical surface of the jaw so that when the reversing lever pivots, the anterior arm exerts a substantially longitudinally rearward force on the jaw which opposes the longitudinally forward bias of the elastic system.

Lateral flanges formed on the pivotal plate are each adapted to carry a lateral packing member. Each packing member has a resilient inner wall which is capable of outward elastic deformation under the action of engagement of a ski boot. The binding also has a sideways release mechanism incorporating an adjustable sideways release spring one end of which bears against the housing. The sideways release mechanism is operative to locate the sole clamp sideways while adapted to allow the sole clamp to be displaced sideways to either side of the housing once the release setting of the sideways release spring is exceeded. The upward and sideways release springs are coil springs of different diameters and are located one within the other. Various embodiments are shown in which the coil springs are either tension or compression springs and are independently or jointly adjustable as desired.

A safety ski binding mounted on a member movable with respect to the ski but fixedly secured thereto. A release of the ski boot from engagement with the ski binding is initiated by forces applied to the heel holder. The heel holder is movable about both a vertical axis and a horizontal axis so that it is responsive to not only vertical and horizontal applied forces by the ski boot but also diagonally applied forces. A connecting lever-like element is movably secured to the housing for the heel holder and has one end thereof connected to a piston reciprocally movable in an open-sided cylinder on the housing. Thus, a reciprocal movement of the piston will initiate a pivotal movement of the connecting element. The other end of the connecting element is pivotally attached to a lock so that the lock is movable in response to a pivotal movement of the connecting element. The lock has a protuberance which projects over a lip on the heel holder to hold the heel holder in the boot holding position. Thus, a pivotal movement of connecting element in response to release forces applied by the ski boot to the binding will effect an unlocking of the heel holder and a release of the ski boot.

In ski binding apparatus, cam surfaces are engaged by bearing surfaces movable with the ski boot arranged to afford lateral restraint yet allow the ski boot to move along the ski. A heel binding has inclined cam surfaces engaged by bearing surfaces movable with the ski boot to afford vertical restraint for the heel of the ski boot. The bearing surfaces pass the extremities of an associated cam surface to release the ski boot upon the application of a selected amount of lateral or vertical thrust to the ski boot in cooperation with a forwardly yieldable toe binding which allows the ski boot to slide forwardly for release at the heel, the toe binding having an adjustable force-applying means resisting forward movement of the ski boot to regulate the amount of thrust required to release at the toe and at the heel. An intermediate support between the toe and heel may also be utilized to provide lateral movement restraint for the ski boot and establish a pivot about which the ski boot will turn to reduce the strain on the leg. In an alternate form, a step-in carrier for the ski boot is releasably secured to the ski by toe and heel bindings together with an intermediate support for establishing a pivot for the carrier and ski boot between the toe and heel without altering or adding structure to the ski boot.
