Abstract: Low cost insulin injection syringes (20) are disclosed in which the low cost is achieved by separating the syringe into two types of components, namely, durable components that do not contact the fluid path and can be reused, and disposable or single-use components that contact the fluid path and are not reused. The ability to reuse the durable components reduces the effective per-unit cost of the syringe when multiple syringes are used. Since these components do not contact the fluid path, sterility is not affected. The disposal burden is also reduced because not all of the syringe components need to be disposed of each time a syringe is used. Two different syringe components—a reusable outer sleeve (24) containing scale markings (44) for the syringe, and a reusable syringe plunger (32)—are provided as durable components in embodiments of the present invention. Syringes (20) manufactured according to the present invention can employ one or both of these durable components. Methods for making, using and packaging such syringes are also disclosed.

Abstract: The subject invention provides a safety pen needle assembly which includes: a hub; a needle carrier; a needle fixed to the needle carrier; a shield; and, a first engageable locking arrangement for fixing the shield to the needle carrier. Upon a predetermined extent of distal movement of the shield relative to the hub, the first locking arrangement is engaged such that the shield becomes fixed to the needle carrier. Upon further distal movement of the shield relative to the hub beyond the predetermined extent of distal movement, the shield and the needle carrier move in concert together relative to the hub causing a proximal end of the needle to move distally relative to the hub to a retracted state. Advantageously, the subject invention provides a reliable, low-cost safety pen needle assembly which does not require a spring or other biasing element.

Abstract: A catheter configured to provide inherent antimicrobial properties includes a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). In some embodiments, an extruded catheter body is fabricated of a PHA. In some embodiments, an extruded catheter body has an exterior layer containing PHA, an interior layer containing PHA, or both exterior and interior layers containing PHA. The PHA layer may be co-extruded with the catheter body. The PHA layer may be coating applied to the catheter body. Useful PHA materials to provide inherent antimicrobial properties include poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) and copolymers of P4HB. The catheter may be an IV catheter, a urinary catheter, a dialysis catheter, or any other catheter introduced into a body lumen.

Abstract: A pen needle assembly (10) includes a pen needle (12) with a hub body (16) having a needle shield (28) that covers a needle (26) and can be retracted to expose the needle during injection and return to the extended position after use and locked in the extended position. A spring (56) is provided to rotate the needle shield after use to a locked position. A locking member (84) can be provided on the needle shield that cooperates with the hub body (16) to prevent rotation after use. An attachment mechanism (38) for the pen needle provides a sensory indication when a needle-bearing hub body (16) is seated on a pen and limits further rotation of the pen needle relative to the delivery device.

Abstract: Induction heating from an induction coil (108) is used to separate a metal medical sharp (144) from its holder (142) by applying a high-frequency oscillating magnetic field that excites eddy currents and resistance heating in the sharp. The heated metal sharp melts the adhesive or plastic securing the sharp to its holder. The use of induction heating is advantageous in that it does not require direct contact between the electrical circuit and the sharp or its holder. The heating can also act to sterilize the sharp and thereby render it less hazardous at the same time that it separates the sharp from its holder. The induction coil can have a stepped or conical shape to concentrate the RF energy at the interface between the metal sharp and its holder.

Abstract: A pen needle is provided with a plastic non-patient end. Since the non-patient end needle does not contact the patient, the needle can be formed with a larger diameter, permitting more secure attachment to a medication pen and greater medication flow from the cartridge through the cannula. In addition, a two-part hub construction comprising a needle bearing sub assembly and an adapter for attachment to the pen body may be used to lower materials volume and costs, and reduce sharps disposal. In embodiments, a hub according to the invention may be provided with a shield that provides an audible and/or tactile indication when full penetration depth of the needle is achieved. Windows on the shield may reveal a color band on the hub at the full-penetration depth position to provide the user with a visual indication that the pen needle has been used.
