    Abstract: A system for cooling heat producing components in a building includes a duct coupled to a room of the building and one or more air moving devices. The duct includes a constricted section. The air moving devices move air through the constricted section of the duct such that water in the air is converted from water vapor to water droplets. The water droplets are carried downstream from the constricted section in a two-phase mixture comprising air and water.

    Abstract: A data center includes rack mounted computing systems arranged in rows with one or more cold aisles between success rows of rack mounted computing systems. A modular cooling unit is configured to mount above one of the cold aisles and form a ceiling for the cold aisle and partially seal the cold aisle from other environments in the data center. The modular cooling unit draws air from the other environments, cools the air, and directs the cooled air into the cold aisle. Modular cooling units may be incrementally added to a data center as additional rows of rack computing systems are added to the data center.

A model based cooling control system is implemented on resources of a provider network that includes the rack mounted computing devices. The model based cooling control system uses a model of the computer room to iteratively perform calculations to determine a set of control parameters for cooling the computer room. The set of control parameters are selected to reduce or optimize an amount of energy and/or water used to cool the computer room while satisfying one or more conditions for cooling the computer room such as a maximum allowable temperature of the room and/or a maximum allowable temperature of the rack mounted computing devices in the computer room.

    Abstract: A modular uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides modular uninterruptible power support to multiple rack computer systems. The modular UPS can include one or more rectifier, battery, and inverter modules installed in one or more rack frames. The modules can be installed in a common rack frame and electrically coupled via a bus bar coupled to the frame. The modules can be installed in separate rack frames and electrically coupled via a bus bar extending between the separate rack frames. The modular UPS can include multiple sets of rectifier modules and battery modules which are electrically coupled to the rack computer systems in parallel and can provide uninterruptible power support subsequent to at least one module failure. The rectifier, battery, and inverter modules installed in the rack frames can be adjusted to provide scalable power support based at least in part upon the power support requirements of the rack computer systems.

    Abstract: Deployable barriers are reversibly deployed in a data center hall to partition the data center. The hall is partitioned into an operational area, where rack computer systems are installed, a non-operational area, and a staging area where support infrastructure is at least partially installed. A barrier can be collapsed to incorporate the staging area into the operational area, thereby expanding the operational area, when rack computer systems are to be installed in the staging area. A barrier deployed in the non-operational area establishes another staging area. A barrier includes a deployment mechanism which extends through a space in the data center to enable a partition to be extended to partition the hall. The barrier can be mounted and deployed on support infrastructure, so that the deployed barrier and a side portion of the support infrastructure collectively partition the hall.
