In representative embodiments, the position detection system comprises a support structure having a cavity, a first light source configured to emit light into at least part of the cavity, a second light source configured to emit light into at least part of the cavity, a first image sensor configured to capture at least part of the light emitted into the cavity by the first and second light sources, an article moveable relative to the support structure, a protuberance attached to the article, and a computation circuit configured to receive a signal from the first image sensor. Movement of the support structure moves the protuberance within the cavity. The computation circuit is configured to compute the location of the protuberance from shadows cast by the protuberance onto the first image sensor.

    摘要: An object to be imaged or detected is illuminated by a single broadband light source or multiple light sources emitting light at different wavelengths. The light is detected by a detector, which includes a light-detecting sensor covered by a hybrid filter. The hybrid filter includes a multi-band narrowband filter mounted over a patterned filter layer. The light strikes the narrowband filter, which passes light at or near the multiple wavelengths of interest while blocking light at all other wavelengths. The patterned filter layer alternately passes the light at one particular wavelength while blocking light at the other wavelengths of interest. This allows the sensor to determine either simultaneously or alternately the intensity of the light at the wavelengths of interest. Filters may also be mounted over the light sources to narrow the spectra of the light sources.

Such an optical system includes first and second optical fibers, each of which has an end surface and a side surface adjacent to the end surface. An adhesive joins the end surface of the first optical fiber to the end surface of the second optical fiber. Additionally, at least a portion of the end surface of the first optical fiber exhibits a wettability for the adhesive that is higher than a wettability for the adhesive exhibited by at least a portion of the side surface of the first optical fiber. Methods and other systems also are provided.

The optical medium provides a light path, and the binding agent is positioned to hold the target complex in an evanescent field created by propagation of light along the light path. The complex interacts with the evanescent field and emits light that the detector positioned to detect. The optical medium and the detector can be included in an optical integrated circuit where detected light passes through the optical medium transverse to the direction of the light path.

    摘要: An optical device capable of illuminating visual light with adjusting color temperature after fabrication is disclosed. The optical device includes a solid state light emitter and a phosphor layer, which is formed over the solid state light emitter. The solid state light emitter, which can be a light emitter diode (“LED”), converts electrical energy to blue light. The phosphor layer subsequently converts first light with a first wavelength to second light with a second wavelength. In one example, the first light is blue light while the second light is white light. A portion of the phosphor layer is adjusted after the phosphor layer is formed for adjusting color of the white light in accordance with color quality of the light detected by a light detector.

    摘要: A process and apparatus is described to produce efficient light emission over a broad portion of the visible spectrum. A lens containing a fluorescent dye is over molded to a short wavelength light emitter (e.g., a blue LED or laser diode) placed within a reflector cup. The fluorescent dye absorbs at least a portion of the light emitted by the diode and re-emits light of a second, longer wavelength. Concentration of the dye within the lens can be varied to control the extent of a region within the lens where most of the light is re-emitted so the remaining portion of the lens can focus the light. One can readily and consistently tailor the color of the light emitted from the lens through selection of the number and types of fluorescent dyes added to the lens, and through their relative concentrations. Inventory is reduced and there are no additional steps required when building varied color LEDs. One simply controls the color of the LED being made by selecting from one of several possible fluorescent dye-containing lens epoxies.
