In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) transmits, to a serving base station, in one or more active bandwidth parts (BWPs) of the UE, a request for a no-downlink-scheduling gap, the request including at least time-domain parameters related to scheduling the no-downlink-scheduling gap, receives, from a neighboring base station, in the one or more active BWPs, a downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) during the no-downlink-scheduling gap, and transmits, in the one or more active BWPs, an uplink positioning reference signal (UL-PRS) during the no-downlink-scheduling gap in response to reception of the DL-PRS.

Abstract: A mobile device and base station are enabled to support improved positioning accuracy in the presence of phase noise in high frequency radio network, such as in 5G New Radio network operating in mmWave. Phase Tracking Reference Signal (PTRS) may be transmitted with Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) and used for positioning and/or used to correct the phase offset between symbols in the PRS. A request may be made to transmit PTRS alone or with the PRS, or that the PRS is transmitted with a specific PRS frame structure, e.g., with a specific comb value, that minimizes the impact of phase noise. The PTRS or a phase ramp of the staggered symbols in the PRS may be used to estimate and correct the phase offset. Less than all of the symbols transmitted in the PRS may be used to generate positioning measurements to minimize the impact of phase noise.

By reducing the number of, for example, resource blocks and/or resource elements to be processed, the power involved in processing the reference signal can be reduced. Hence, in some implementations, aspects of the disclosure can enable low-power low-bandwidth devices, such as NarrowBand Internet of Things (IoT) (NBIoT), to decode reference signals such as PRS.

In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) receives positioning assistance data from a location server, the positioning assistance data including at least a first expected measurement value and a first expected measurement uncertainty value defining a first search window during which the UE is expected to measure a first plurality of positioning reference signal (PRS) resources transmitted by a first transmission-reception point (TRP), determines a best symbol hypothesis that is common to a first set of PRS resources of the first plurality of PRS resources, wherein the best symbol hypothesis is a symbol within the first search window during which a signal strength of each PRS resource of the first set of PRS resources is maximized, and measures each PRS resource of a second set of PRS resources of the first plurality of PRS resources only during the best symbol hypothesis.
