A peripheral control system enhances expandability in the operation of peripheral by enabling the customization and display of operation panels for each of the peripherals, regardless of whether any operation panel exists at the display device side. The peripheral control system is configured by connecting a TV and a recorder via an HDMI connection. The TV stores operation panel information that includes array information for arraying, on the screen, image data of the operation buttons that comprise the operation panel of the recorder. The recorder stores image data of the operation buttons, and sends, according to operation panel information obtained from the TV, the aforementioned stored image data of the operation buttons in association with the array information to the TV. The TV disposes and displays image data of the operation buttons sent from the recorder, at a position that is in accordance with the array information.

According to a method of the present invention for controlling display of a menu screen, content is displayed in a content display region located in a central part of a display screen in a size smaller than the display screen, and a plurality of icons are displayed in a circle around the content display region so that the plurality of icons sequentially move to a specific position in accordance with a user's selecting operation while moving around the content display region without overlapping the content display region.

Disclosed herein are a display device, which can control a user interface being displayed by a user's gaze and touch input, and a controlling method thereof and a controlling method of the same. The method for controlling the display device includes a hierarchical user interface and also includes displaying at least one control interface, detecting a user's gaze selecting one of the displayed control interface, transmitting information for providing a portable device with a sub-control interface of the control interface selected by the user's gaze, to the portable device, and receiving a control signal respective to the selected control interface from the portable device, and executing the received control signal. Herein, the portable device may provide the sub-control interface to a user with tactile feedback, may generate the control signal in accordance with a detected touch input, and may transmit the generated control signal to the display device.

An user interface for facilitating user operation. At time of an initial setup, the user selects a desired character, a room, images of items to be installed in the room, such as a television receiver set, a personal computer apparatus, etc. After selection, a user interface is formed in which images of the character and an item are incorporated into an image of the room, such as for example a living room selected by the user. The user may virtually reproduce his or her room at the user interface by imagining his or her room so as to select a room and install items. As a result, it becomes possible to provide the user with a user interface which allows an intuitive and simple operation.

Accordingly, a virtual keypad system for inputting text is provided. A virtual keypad system includes a remote controller having at least one touchpad incorporated therein and divided into a plurality of touch zones. A display device is in data communication with the remote controller and is operable to display a user interface including a keypad, where each key of the keypad is mapped to a touch zone of the touchpad. A prediction module, in response to an operator pressing a given touch zone to select a particular character, performs one or more key prediction methods to predict one or more next plausible keys. A key mapping module remaps the touch zones of the touchpad to the keys of the keypad based on the one or more next plausible keys.

A system and method to provide navigation screens during remote control of devices. A matrix is used to relate button depression and navigation screen to a particular activity. Generic buttons on the remote control can be dynamically defined according to the content of the navigation screens and the configuration of the devices under the control of the remote control.
