Abstract:
A subambient pressure feature for assisting in guidance of storage tape within a tape transport system such as a data storage tape cartridge and/or a tape drive. The storage tape is extended between two tape reels along a tape path defined, in part, by a tape guide. The tape guide includes a curved tape-receiving surface defined by an entrance side and an exit side. The subambient pressure feature is located along the tape path and is adapted to induce frictional engagement between the tape and at least a portion of the tape-receiving surface at speeds of not less than 1 meter/second to suppress lateral tape motion.
Abstract:
In general, the invention is directed to techniques for reducing deformation of tape in data tape cartridges during storage to promote dimensional stability and increased tape longevity. The techniques involve controlling the winding tension applied to a tape during a final winding pass prior to unloading a data tape cartridge containing the tape from a drive. Excessive winding tensions can produce strain and compression on a tape pack, causing the tape to deform over time. Applications of reduced winding tension during the final pass provide reduced tape pack tension during periods in which the data tape cartridge is not used.
Abstract:
A jewel case 10 for housing at least one piece of recording media is constructed from a blend of resins. The blend includes at least two resins, the first being a stiffer resin and the second, a flexible resin, wherein a clear and flexible jewel case is produced.
Abstract:
The invention is generally directed to techniques for reducing premature drying of solvent-based coatings, including premature drying at sites on the apparatus that applies the coatings. By introduction of solvent vapor proximate to the coating apparatus, and by passively bringing the solvent vapor to the site, the risk of premature drying is reduced. In the presence of the solvent vapor, solvent in the coating fluid tends not to evaporate quickly. The solvent vapor may be introduced by any of a variety of solvent vapor emission devices, and may be brought to the site passively by, for example, increasing the concentration of solvent vapor in a boundary layer that moves with the substrate being coated, diffusion, or natural convection.
Abstract:
In general, the invention provides scaling tools for compensating for scaling variations between two printing systems, such as an analog printing system and a digital printing system. An operator designates one of the systems as the reference printing system and the other printing system as the scalable printing system. The operator constructs a reference grid with the reference printing system and a scaling grid with the scalable printing system. By comparing the reference grid and the scaling grid, the operator finds one or more scaling factors, which the operator may use to set the scale of the scalable printing system. The operator may print an image using the reference printing system and the scalable printing system, and the scalable printing system prints to the same scale as the reference printing system.
Abstract:
In one embodiment, a display device includes an integrated color matching processor that processes color data to facilitate accurate color rendering on the display device. The integrated color matching processor can be internal to the display device or external to the display device. Either way the processor may receive color input, process the color input, and output altered color image data to the display.
Abstract:
The invention presents the concept of self-referenced holographic data recording. In exemplary embodiments, the invention comprises methods of recording holograms on holographic data storage media; media produced by such methods; and self-referencing holographic data storage systems. A method of recording data in a holographic recording medium may comprise illuminating a medium with a data encoded first optical beam, optically directing a zero frequency Fourier component of the first optical beam to create a second optical beam, and illuminating the medium with the second optical. In some embodiments, for example, a self-referencing holographic data storage system has a single optical path directed towards a medium.
Abstract:
In one embodiment, holographic data storage medium includes a first thermoplastic substrate portion having a thickness less than approximately 2 millimeters and a second thermoplastic substrate portion having a thickness less than approximately 2 millimeters. A holographic recording material may be sandwiched between the first and second thermoplastic substrate portions. By making thermoplastic substrate portions sufficiently thin, edge wedge problems can be avoided.
Abstract:
In exemplary embodiments, the invention provides one or more processes for making stampers for stamping replica data storage disks. For instance, the invention may provide a process for making a family of stampers from one master. Moreover, the invention may provide a way to systematically adjust the depth of the grooves on a stamper in a particular family of stampers while maintaining groove widths that are substantially the same as those of the master.
Abstract:
Limiting the sound pressure level presented to the listener's ears by one or more headphones, using processing capabilities of a personal media device. Headphones, coupled to audio signals from a personal media device, include a sensor to measure the sound pressure level presented to the listener's ears, and provide that measure to the personal media device. The personal media device, optionally aided by one or more analog circuits, adjusts the audio signal so that the sound pressure level is maintained within a recommended range.
