    摘要: Crystal polystyrene with improved flow properties useful in injection molding is prepared in a two-stage process in which a first portion of monomer is polymerized in the presence of about 0.3 to about 2.0% peroxide initiator to convert about 70 to 95% of the monomer present to polymer having a number average molecular weight of 20,000 to 50,000 and a weight average of 50,000 to 100,000; then adding the rest of the monomer thereby reducing the catalyst concentration to generate a second moiety of polymer so that the final product has a weight average molecular weight of 150,000-300,000, and a number average of 50,000-70,000.

    摘要: Ethylenically unsaturated material susceptible to free-radical polymerization, e.g., vinyl chloride and unsaturated polyesters, is polymerized, e.g., in an aqueous medium with an alkaline buffering reagent and an initiator system comprising an acid anhydride, e.g., isobutyric anhydride, and a peroxygen compound selected from an organic peroxy acid (peracid), e.g., peracetic acid, and hydrogen peroxide. Optionally, a further organic free-radical type initiator, e.g., lauroyl peroxide, a dialkyl peroxydicarbonate or azobisisobutyronitrile, is used in combination with the acid anhydride and peroxygen compound.Preferably, the anhydride and peroxygen compound are introduced separately into the polymerization medium. It is believed that at least a portion of the anhydride combines with the peroxygen compound to form the corresponding diacyl peroxide.

    摘要: Provided is a polymerizable composition including (a) a polymerizable component comprising a diol bis(allyl carbonate) and/or a pre-polymer thereof; and (b) a polymerization initiator component including: (i) a di(C6-C10 alkyl) peroxydicarbonate, and (ii) an organic peroxide having one peroxy, one peroxycarbonate, or one peroxybenzoate group and a 1,1-dimethylalkyl group bonded to a peroxy oxygen, where (ii) comprises a molecular weight ranging from 200 to 250 g/mole, the polymerization initiator (b) is free of diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, (i) comprises an amount ranging from 4.87% to 7.90% by weight relative to the total solids of the polymerizable composition and (ii) comprises an amount within the range defined by the following formula: (4.406X2−0.592X+0.021)≤Y≤(0.726X2−0.121X+0.009) where X corresponds to the weight fraction of (i) and Y corresponds to the weight fraction of (ii). Also provided is a method of making an optical article from the polymerizable composition.

    摘要: Disclosed are styrenic polymers made by a mass or solution process, where the amount of trimer consisting of styrene and/or acrylonitrile is less than about 0.50 weight percent. Also disclosed is a method of minimizing the amount of trimer consisting of styrene and/or acrylonitrile in styrenic polymers made by a mass or solution process. The method includes the steps of lowering the temperature of the polymerization reaction mixture and including more than one initiator in the polymerization reaction mixture.
