摘要:
Rotary safety shutter mechanisms for use in computerized tomographic X-ray scanners of the type wherein a source of radiation and a detector means are mounted for movement on opposite sides of a medium in order that the radiation passes through successive planar sections of medium and is attenuated and detected to give an output. The safety shutter mechanisms are arranged to be positioned adjacent the outlet aperture of the radiation source to selectively block the outlet upon occurrence of a predetermined condition. Two different embodiments of safety shutter mechanisms are disclosed. In each embodiment, the mechanism comprises a housing mounted adjacent the outlet aperture and having a through passage through which radiation from the source can pass. A cylindrical shutter member is carried in the housing transversely of the passage and mounted for rotary movement between a first position which permits the flow of radiation from the source and a second position which blocks the flow. In the first embodiment, the shutter member is moved from the second to the first position by a linear solenoid connected with the shutter member through a crank which is continually biased to move the shutter to the second position. In the second embodiment, the shutter member is actuated to the first position by a rotary solenoid aligned with the axis of rotation of the shutter member and directly coupled thereto.

An irradiation device for the uniform irradiation of goods by means of electro-magnetic radiation having a quantum energy larger than 5 KeV comprises at least one radiation source, means for the reception of goods to be irradiated, and at least one shielding element arranged laterally of the radiation path from the radiation source and the center axis of the goods in such a manner that the shielding effect of the shielding element increases with increasing lateral space from this radiation path. The radiation source, the shielding element and the means for the reception of the goods to be irradiated are arranged to allow for the radiation to enter the goods through the entire superficies thereof in such a way that the region immediately around the center axis of the goods is irradiated without radiation being affected by the shielding element.

An adjustable diaphragm arrangement, or device, for defining an aperture ch confines a beam of radiation, especially for radiation therapy, in which cup shaped diaphragm elements, the edges of which define the edge of the aperture and which elements are concave toward a common point at or near the source of radiation, are tiltably mounted for simultaneous movement to control the size of the aperture, and may, in addition, be rotatable to vary the orientation of the aperture, all of the aforesaid movements being carried out without change in the axis of the beam of radiation. The parts of the device may be formed of a material which strongly absorbs radiation.

An apparatus is provided for controlling the activation of a high energy radiation source having a shutter. The apparatus includes magnets and magnetically responsive switches appropriately placed and interconnected so that only with the shutter and other parts of the source in proper position can safe emission of radiation out an open shutter occur.

In an X-ray collimator including both "near" and "far" shutter mechanisms, the improvement comprising locating two pairs of independently movable near shutters within an outwardly extending lead cone. The cone is positioned against the X-ray generator tube window and as a result the near shutters are in closer proximity to the focal spot of a rotating anode disc of an X-ray tube than heretofore possible. The cone contains an aperture which defines the maximum size of the primary beam passing through the shutter mechanisms; however, the body of the cone and the closer positioning of the near shutters to the focal spot effectively controls and restricts secondary radiation which is emitted at angles different from the primary beam passing through the collimator.

In X-ray apparatus, shutter opening dimensions are controlled automatically in accordance with the distance of an X-ray tube from a film and the size of film being used. Shutter opening is controlled automatically in accordance with film size only when the X-ray tube is oriented in particular directions, and is spaced from the film within a predetermined range of distances. Actual shutter opening is compared with computed, desired shutter opening and the actual shutter opening adjusted to correspond to the desired opening. The circuitry is digital in nature, as opposed to analog, and energizes shutter drive motors to operate at fixed speed to adjust the shutters properly, at which time the motors are completely deenergized. Means are provided for manually adjusting the shutter opening when it is desired not to operate automatically, or when the Xray tube is oriented in other than predetermined directions, or when the X-ray tube is spaced from the film by a distance outside the predetermined range.
