Abstract:
A signal is generated at the time of transfer of control by an electronic computor controlling a multiplicity of local equipment to control by a fail-safe apparatus if the phase time of display of traffic signals of one of the local equipments is in coincidence with the phase time of the fail-safe apparatus. This signal inhibits the control of the traffic signals by the local equipment, and the fail-safe apparatus controls the traffic signals. If the phase of display of traffic signals is not in coincidence with the phase of the fail-safe apparatus at the time of transfer of control, the signal is not generated, and the control of traffic signals is performed by the local equipment until the above described phases come into coincidence.
Abstract:
System for controlling traffic signals in which a local controller is located at each controlled intersection, respectively, to control the operation of a traffic signal at its associated intersection. A central controller is connected to the local controllers for the transmission of signals thereto. The central controller is programmed to provide output data which activate the local controllers. The data includes two digital words. One digital word selects the local controller to be activated and the other digital word selects the phase to which the selected local controller is to be advanced. The selected local controllers are operated by the central controller for controlling the traffic lights at their associated intersections. Each local controller includes a set of timers for controlling intervals that are program invariants. The local controllers will continue to operate in a fixed time mode in the absence of an overriding signal for the local controllers. When a local controller is activated by the central controller to advance to a designated light phase, the local controller will advance to the appropriate vehicle clearance interval and to time-out this interval independently before advancing the intersection lights to the phase designated by the central controller.
Abstract:
A modular simulator permitting study of traffic flow patterns under various traffic control conditions. Street intersection simulator modules are provided, each including on its front panel or face a plurality of street intersections with traffic control indicators for each traffic phase at each intersection. A plurality of timing circuitry modules generate various timing signals, and a plurality of switching modules permit selection of the particular timing signals provided to each traffic control indicator. The street intersection simulator modules are mounted on a frame for easy viewing. The modular construction permits the provision of as large a simulator as desired.
Abstract:
An apparatus for centrally controlling traffic over a wide geographical area. A master controller collects traffic information from traffic signal stations throughout the area at predetermined intervals, and stores this information in its associated memory, along with various operating time parameters associated with the traffic signal operation at each traffic signal station. A central processor reads and evaluates the traffic information stored in the master controller and continuously updates the operating time parameters. The master controller controls the traffic signals on the basis of their operating time parameters.
Abstract:
Two lines interconnect a central traffic signal control station with a local control station. The two lines carry signals from the central station to the local station that determines whether the local station is under local or central control. When on central control, the two lines carry signals that cause the traffic signal at the local station to advance to the next condition. In addition, the system includes circuitry that establishes a predetermined interval in which the central station is conditioned to receive signals over the two lines from the local station indicative of a predetermined condition, such as the main thoroughfare signal being green so that a shift between local and central control may be effected without interrupting the smooth flow of traffic during the changeover, and so that central control may continuously monitor the operation of the local control station.
