Abstract: A bi-directional cannula feature capture mechanism is described herein. Generally, the capture mechanism comprises an inner housing, an outer housing, and a cannula. The inner housing comprises a proximal and a distal cannula feature mating component. The outer housing is adapted to slidably receive the inner housing in a proximal direction. Additionally, the cannula extends through the inner housing and the cannula's feature has a proximal engagement and a distal engagement. The proximal and distal engagements are respectively configured to irreversibly engage the proximal and distal cannula feature mating components when the cannula tip is moved into a shielded position.

Abstract: A needle shield assembly for use with a needle assembly is disclosed. The needle shield assembly includes an elongate needle shield comprising a shield portion, a hub connection portion and a bridge portion including a living hinge having a thickness. The bridge portion joins the hub connection portion and the shield portion. The hub connection portion includes a partially circular receiving ring having a diameter sized to frictionally receive a flange of a hub of the needle assembly. The shield portion includes two longitudinal walls defining a cavity and a needle assembling receiving cavity between the two longitudinal walls defining a recess. The shield portion is configured to pivot from an open position in which a needle cannula is exposed, to a closed needle protecting position in which a distal end of the needle cannula is within the longitudinal opening of the shield.

Abstract: Vented syringes are described herein. A vented syringe includes a syringe body and a plunger body. The syringe body defines a syringe cavity. The plunger body is at least partially disposed within the syringe cavity. The plunger body includes an air intake channel defined within the plunger body. The vented syringe further includes a plunger seal that is sealingly engaged with the syringe cavity to cooperatively define a syringe volume. The vented syringe further includes a one-way valve in fluid communication with the air intake channel and the syringe volume, wherein the one-way valve is configured to prevent fluid flow from the syringe volume to the air intake channel and permit fluid flow from the air intake channel to the syringe volume.

Abstract: A sealed fluid transfer device comprised of tubing, a proximal fitting, and a distal needle assembly is provided. The needle assembly includes a needle hub secured to a needle cannula. A cantilevered actuator arm extends outwardly from the needle hub having an actuator button at its free end. The needle assembly is disposed in a barrel and can move from a distal position, where the needle is exposed, to a proximal position, where the needle is shielded. The barrel includes a septum which seals the barrel. A spring is disposed in the barrel for propelling the needle assembly to the proximal position. The barrel includes an aperture that receives the actuator button for locking the spring in a compressed condition. Depression of the actuator button enables the spring to propel the needle assembly into its proximal position. A safety mechanism prevents inadvertent depression of the actuator button.

Abstract: A disinfection cap or device for disinfecting medical connectors. The cap includes a visual indicator that changes color after sufficient scrubbing effort and time have been expended by a clinician to disinfect the medical device, giving positive visual feedback to the treating clinician. An external housing of the cap includes a disinfection medium, such as a disinfectant sponge that is coupled to a rotating collar. The housing is oriented so that the sponge contacts the medical device to be cleaned. Collar rotation in turn rotates the disinfectant sponge against the VAD, providing scrubbing action. A visualization chamber within the cap contains two isolated fluids of distinct colors. As the collar is rotated it mixes the two isolated fluids, changing color of the resultant mixture. When the visualization chamber shows the new, mixed third color, the medical device is disinfected.

Abstract: A disinfecting assembly for a prefilled flushing syringe. The disinfecting assembly includes a scrubbing cap and a disinfecting cap. The scrubbing cap includes a chamber adapted to receive a needle-free connector of an intravenous (IV) catheter. A scrubber and a disinfectant are contained within the chamber of the scrubbing cap. The disinfecting cap is removably connected to the scrubbing cap. A tip cap, adapted to connect to and cover a syringe tip of the syringe, extends from one of the disinfecting cap and the scrubbing cap or a housing connecting the disinfecting cap and the scrubbing cap. Also, a prefilled flushing syringe including the disinfecting assembly and a method of using the prefilled flushing syringe to disinfect a needle-free connector and catheter.
