The invention involves a multimeter with a meter probe module and phasing probe module capable of wireless communication, proximity measurements, and accurately reading phase degrees. The meter probe module and the phasing probe module can communicate wirelessly, via a wired cable interface, or any combination thereof. The meter probe module and phasing probe module have unique radio frequency serial numbers that allow the probe modules to only communicate with its paired partner probe module while ignoring all other probe modules. The multimeter has a measurement point capable of taking direct contact measurements. The multimeter also has a measurement point capable of taking a voltage measurement without directly contacting the object to be measured. This is accomplished by taking voltage readings from the electric field of the air surrounding said object. The improved multimeter may allow an operator to more safely gather accurate information about an object being measured.

A liquid crystal display circuit (9) comprises a recirculating shift register (14) having serial input and output terminals for receiving and generating binary data in bit serial format and a plurality of intermediate parallel output terminals for coupling display data to a liquid crystal display (LCD) (10). Display data are loaded into the shift register (14) during a display update mode and recirculated for display by the LCD (10) during a data refresh mode. Loading and recirculation of display data are controlled by logic circuitry (16) in a feedback loop (15, 17) of the recirculating shift register (14). To minimize DC buildup on the LCD (10), data inversion provided in the feedback loop causes periodic polarity reversal of data during recirculation. In addition, a shift register reset circuit (28) monitors the continuity of data being supplied to the LCD (10) for display. The reset circuit (28) resets the shift register (14) in response to discontinuities in input data flow to further minimize DC buildup.

This invention pertains to a fluorescent indicator adapted to indicate a level of a signal to be measured in an acoustic instrument and/or a vertical condition of a magnetic head in a multi-channel tape recorder. The fluorescent indicator comprises a fluorescent indicating tube having a plurality of segment anodes arranged in a row from a lowest level side to a highest level side, pulse generator means to generate clock pulses having the number of pulses corresponding to the level of a signal, and counter means including a plurality of output terminals connected to the respective segment anodes to have output signal sequentially generated corresponding to the count of the clock pulses to operate the segment anodes of the fluorescent indicating tube. The fluorescent indicating tube starts to be operated on starting to count the clock pulses and the segment anodes of the fluorescent indicating tube are sequentially operated from the lowest level side toward the highest level side as the signal level becomes higher. The fluorescent indicator may be applied to a tape recorder having a multi-channel magnetic head and may further comprise a phase difference detector to electrically detect a phase difference between playback outputs of the two different channels on the magnetic head, and the output of the phase difference detector being adapted to operate one of the segment anodes of the fluorescent indicating tube corresponding to the phase difference of the playback outputs.

Luminous energy of a light-emitting element in an optical device is adjusted to a desired level by a light adjusting circuit including a light-receiving element adapted to detect the level of luminous energy of light emitted from the light-emitting element, an up/down counter circuit for counting clock signals up or down according to the level detected by the light-receiving element, and a current adjusting circuit for resetting the current intensity supplied to the light-emitting element according to output data from the up/down counter circuit.

A test device includes a pair of test probes (21 and 22) which are manipulated onto a succession of test sites (11, 13 and 16) formed on a complex circuit board, and the operator is visually apprised of test results without loss of eye contact with the test sites. Visual appraisal is provided by a small light emitting diode (46) which is activated in accordance with the probed test results. The diode is mounted on the operator's safety glasses (58) and is of such size as to be not discernible when positioned inside the normal focal point of the operator's eye, but a glow is discernible when the diode is operated upon a particular test condition being ascertained by the test probes.
