An apparatus for looping anchoring annular structures of a tyre for vehicle wheels, includes at least three looping drums. Each looping drum has a longitudinal axis thereof, with respect to which it is radially expandable/contractible in a manner so as to turn up the loop around an anchoring annular structure. The apparatus also includes a loop deposit station, a loading station configured for loading the anchoring annular structures on the looping drum and an unloading station configured for unloading the looped anchoring annular structures from the looping drum. The loop deposit station, loading station and unloading station are angularly offset from each other. A turret transfer apparatus supports the looping drums in positions angularly offset with respect to each other and is configured for transferring the looping drums between the loop deposit station, the loading station and the unloading station rotating around a vertically-arranged transfer axis.

A method of building a tire onto a tire building drum is described. The method includes the steps of: applying one or more tire building components onto the drum to form a tire carcass having carcass ends; wherein the drum has an inboard section, a center section and an outboard section. The inboard section has a rotating spindle and a sliding shaft, wherein the sliding shaft is slidable within the spindle. The inboard section has a radially expandable bead lock mounted on the spindle, said center section mounted to a hub, wherein the hub is mounted on the sliding shaft. The center section has a plurality of tiles mounted thereon that are radially expandable, wherein the outboard section of the drum is mounted on a distal end of the sliding shaft, wherein the outboard section further has a radially expandable bead lock; wherein the center section and the outboard section are axially movable by sliding of the sliding shaft. The method further includes the steps of: placing a first and second bead around the tire carcass on the drum so that the carcass ends of the tire carcass extend laterally outward of the beads; radially expanding the first and second bead locks into engagement with the first and second bead; and expanding the carcass located between the bead locks radially outward by radially expanding a center section of the tire building drum while moving only the bead lock on the outboard section axially inward towards the inboard section.

A multi-piece sealing sleeve is disclosed. The multi-piece sealing sleeve includes annular first and second layers of a substantially air-impermeable material. The first layer has an inner edge sized to surround a base portion of the tire shaping drum. An outer edge of the first layer extends radially outwardly to overlie at least a portion of a radially expandable and collapsible structure defined by the tire shaping drum. The second layer is sized to overlie and establish sealing engagement with at least a portion of the first layer and a bead seat defined by the radially expandable and collapsible structure of the tire shaping drum. The first and second layers cooperate to establish a substantially airtight seal between the tire shaping drum base portion and the bead seat.

A tire-assembling apparatus includes an assembling drum, radial-movement devices, and at least one axial-movement actuator. The assembling drum includes first and second halves axially opposed along a geometric axis of the drum. Each of the halves includes a plurality of circumferentially-distributed radial sectors. The radial-movement devices associated with each of the halves selectively translate corresponding radial sectors between a contracted condition and an expanded condition. The at least one axial-movement actuator translates the halves relative to each other between an approaching condition and a spaced-apart condition. Each of the radial sectors includes a holding member and a supporting member. The holding member defines an engagement seat of an annular anchoring structure to a bead-part of a carcass sleeve fitted on the drum. The supporting member is linked, relative to the holding member, in a position axially-internal to the holding member and movable between first and second operating conditions.

A shaping drum for a tire having two bead holding systems mounted facing one another on a central shaft. Each of the bead holding systems includes a support mounted to be movable axially relative to the shaft. On each support there is mounted an assembly which includes a plurality of rigid segments and an elastic membrane which surrounds them. The rigid segments are each mounted on the support and swing about an articulation, the axis of which is perpendicular to a radial plane. A seat is formed on each assembly, the seat being arranged axially on the inside of the articulations, the articulations forming a crown on the support. The elastic membrane is fixed to the support axially on the inside and on the outside of the crown of articulations.
