Abstract:
A method for selectively removing an aluminum-silicon coating fired on a surface of a metallic structure is described. The method includes the step of contacting the coating with molten potassium hydroxide (KOH), under conditions sufficient to remove the coating without substantially affecting the metallic surface. Methods for preparing a magnetic component are also described. They involve masking pre-selected regions of the surface of the component, using an aluminum-silicon coating that is fired onto the surface, prior to a nitriding step. The coating is then removed according to the procedure outlined herein.
Abstract:
Compositions of nanoparticles functionalized with at least one zwitterionic moiety, methods for making a plurality of nanoparticles, and methods of their use as diagnostic agents are provided. The nanoparticles have characteristics that result in minimal retention of the particles in the body compared to other nanoparticles. The nanoparticle comprising a nanoparticulate transition metal oxide covalently functionalized with a silane-functionalized non-targeting zwitterionic moiety.
Abstract:
A cooling system and a related method is presented. The cooling system includes a reservoir configured to selectively supply a cooling fluid; a circulation loop fluidly coupled to the reservoir, and configured to circulate the cooling fluid to and from the reservoir, and a heat exchanger thermally coupled to the circulation loop and configured to exchange heat with the cooling fluid. The reservoir includes a refrigerant and an anti-freeze additive. The anti-freeze additive is characterized by a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) such that when an operating temperature of the reservoir is greater than the LCST, the reservoir is configured to supply a cooling fluid including the refrigerant to the circulation loop; and when the operating temperature of the reservoir is lower than the LCST, the reservoir is configured to supply a cooling fluid including the refrigerant and the anti-freeze additive to the circulation loop.

A method of maintaining the performance level of an electrochemical cell is described. The cell usually includes a negative electrode that includes an alkali metal; a positive electrode that includes at least one transition metal halide; a molten salt electrolyte based on an alkali metal haloaluminate; and a sodium ion-conducting solid electrolyte partitioning the positive electrode from the negative electrode. The method is based on a treatment regimen that includes the step of applying a series of electrical cycles to the cell, wherein the series includes at least one deep discharge of the cell. Each discharge of the cell is usually followed by recharging the cell to its available capacity.
Abstract:
A method of synthesizing magnetic nanoparticles comprising soft magnetic phases is provided, wherein the method comprises degassing a first mixture at a temperature in a range from about 80° C. to 130° C. The first mixture comprises a solvent, a compound comprising iron, cobalt, or combinations thereof dissolved in the solvent, and an organic component comprising a fatty acid or an amine. Degassing the first mixture is followed by adding a capping ligand to the first mixture under inert atmosphere to form a second mixture; adding a reducing agent to the second mixture at a temperature in a processing temperature range from about 250° C. to about 350° C. to form a third mixture; and incubating the third mixture at a temperature within the processing temperature range to form nanoparticles comprising a soft magnetic phase.
