    Abstract: There is disclosed a sample mixing system having a multiplicity of sample containers into which are inserted magnetic stirring rods. Each of a pair of pole pieces is connected to an alternating current electromagnet between which pole pieces the sample containers are positioned to intercept the alternating magnetic field generated by the electromagnet causing the magnetic stirring rods to move, thereby stirring the contents of the containers.

    Abstract: There is disclosed apparatus for automatically calculating spectral bandwidth in a monochromator of the type having slit and wavelength drive mechanisms. A stationary scale member is scribed with indicating marks related to slit width. A sliding scale member is driven by the wavelength drive mechanism to slide juxtaposed with respect to the stationary scale member, the sliding scale member having a surface upon which are scribed indicating marks related to dispersion of the monochromator, the scribed marks of the sliding scale being calibrated with respect to the scribed marks of the stationary scale to indicate on the sliding scale the dispersion of the monochromator opposite a given slit width indication on the stationary scale. A moving indicator driven across the scribed surfaces of both scale members by the slit drive mechanism has a reference line to continuously indicate the monochromator slit width on the stationary scale and the corresponding dispersion on the sliding scale as the monochromator spectrum is scanned.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a flexible mounting structure, rigidly supported at only two locations, for providing opposed precision motion of at least two mounting surfaces oppositely disposed upon the mounting structure in response to a force coupled symmetrically applied to the mounting structure. A pair of resilient connecting members, each having one of the two locations for support, and a pair of rigid mounting rails, each rail having at least one of the mounting surfaces disposed thereon, are connected to form a parallelogram whereby the mounting surfaces are substantially parallel. A rotatable shaft is disposed at right angles and adjacent to the rigid mounting rails. A drive tape is connected between the rotatable shaft and each of the rigid mounting rails in such a manner that as the shaft is rotated, each drive tape wraps around the shaft to provide the symmetrical force couple which moves the mounting rails. A cam follower arm is attached to the rotatable shaft and a cam roller bearing attached to the arm rides on a rotatable cam. Optical elements attached to the mounting surfaces transverse a precision path in accordance with the motion of the mounting rails.
