Abstract: Spacers (10) with a cell-formed lattice-work for retaining parallel elongated elements such as fuel rods (5) into a bundle in a nuclear reactor fuel assembly are arranged in a suitable spaced relationship to each other along the bundle, and the cells are formed from tubular sleeves (1). Each one of these sleeves (1) offers a passage for one of the elements in order to fix the elements in relation to each other. Substantially half the number of sleeves (1) in a spacer (10), distributed evenly over the cross section of the bundle, are located in a first plane across the bundle and are joined to each other inside a first frame (11) surrounding the bundle, thereby forming a lattice of sleeves (1) and gaps (13). The remaining sleeves (1) of the spacer (10) are joined together inside a second frame (12) surrounding the bundle and are located in a second plane, separate from the first plane, across the bundle. These sleeves (1) also form a lattice of sleeves (1) and gaps (13), the sleeves (1) in the different planes being arranged in such a way that an element fixed by a sleeve (1) in the first plane freely traverses a gap (13) arranged in the second plane and vice versa.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for manufacturing nuclear fuel rods by introducing elongated fuel pellets into cladding tubes. The pellets are arranged in end-to-end relationship on a support and are pushed axially from the support over a well defined break point and onto a downwardly inclined guide. The guide is disposed at a sufficient angle to cause the pellets to slide therealong under the influence of gravity. The cladding tube is disposed at the lower end of the guide in alignment therewith and in a position for receiving the sliding pellets.

Abstract: An arrangement for centering a tube includes guides on which are mounted blocks slidable towards and away from each other by a hydraulic cylinder arrangement. Each of the blocks has a frame pivoted on it to rock about an axis perpendicular to the direction of movement of the blocks, the turning movement of the frames on the blocks being limited by an adjustable set screw and a spring on opposite sides of the frame pivot. Each frame carries either two rollers turnable on spaced axes which are parallel to the length of the tube or a single roller mounted to turn on an axis perpendicular to the direction of movement of the blocks, this roller having a central portion of small diameter and end portions of greater diameter.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of sealing a fuel rod (1) after pressurization with helium. The method comprises supplying helium to the fuel rod via a fill hole (3) provided through the plug (2). Over the fill hole (3) there is placed a body (4) which, upon sealing, is welded against the plug by means of resistance projection welding.

Abstract: A device for transporting nuclear fuel rod cladding tubes transversely along a production line has a travel surface for the tubes and a transport chain running in the direction of transport parallel to the travel surface. The chain has a plurality of two-armed levers pivotally mounted thereon and springs pulling these levers in the direction of the travel of the chain. The levers have rollers at their ends which can engage between tubes on the travel surface. The springs are of such strength that the resistance to movement of a predetermined number of tubes prevents them from rising up, so that the rollers roll underneath the tubes, but permits them to rise up when a small number of tubes is in front of them to engage the tubes and pull them along the track. This provides in effect a storage if too many tubes are found on the track at any one time.
