Abstract: A skimmer cover plate is disclosed for use with a pool skimmer system. The skimmer cover plate allows the pool skimmer to work alternatively with an underwater suction operated pool cleaner. The skimmer cover plate is designed to seal the upper surface of the well of a skimmer. The hose of the suction cleaner is connectable to a pipe on the cover plate. The cover plate includes an indexable valve which is movable between two positions for varying the flow of fluid and debris from the pool directly into the well and basket of the pool skimmer. When fluid flow is restricted through the valve, the suction will be diverted to power the pool cleaner. When the valve is opened, debris will pass from the surface of the skimmer through the valve and into the basket for collection. An indexable valve is provided which indexes in response to the cycling of the pump.

Abstract: An automatic valve is disclosed for controlling the direction of fluid flow. The valve is particularly suited for use with automatic pool cleaning systems to alternately direct fluid flow to the filtration system of an automatic pool cleaner. The valve includes a primary conduit and a branch segment to define an alternate path for fluid flow. A reciprocating piston is mounted within the branch segment. Indexing is provided by a first cammed surface, formed at one end of the piston which includes a plurality of slots. The slots are selectively engaged with a stop pin. The condition of the valve is determined by the length of the particular slot engaged with the stop pin. A spring is provided for biasing the piston out of engagement with the stop pin when the fluid flow is interrupted. In one embodiment of the subject valve, the volume and pressure of the fluid flow are automatically controlled.

Abstract: An improved water jet pool cleaner system includes a pool cleaner with a buoyant housing powered about the pool by forward and reverse driving nozzles so dirt and other debris is gathered at the low point on the bottom of the pool by the action of depending cleaner hoses. Water from the filter pump enters a fluid reservoir from which it flows along parallel flow paths to the forward and reverse driving nozzles, to a turbine, and to the cleaner hoses. Pressurized water is directed to the forward and reverse nozzles through a rotary valve which is rotated by the drive train connected to the turbine. The parallel flow paths permits water to be provided to the driving nozzles, to the turbine and to the cleaner hoses at pressures substantially equal to the fluid reservoir pressure. The system uses a flow diverter downstream of the main pool filter to divert the proper amount of water to the cleaner. Manual and automatic flow diverters and a novel in-line filter are also disclosed.

Abstract: A suction head for a swimming pool cleaner comprising a housing which is open at its lower side and has inclined bristles attached to its lower edge for supporting on a surface to be cleaned. The housing has a rotary sleeve mounted to its top for connection of a suction hose in turn to be connected to a water suction pump. Said sleeve opens in a chamber within the housing in which a vibratory element is pivotally mounted, said element having a crescent or air-foil shape. By a flow of water sucked through said chamber, the vibratory element is automatically brought into a vibrating movement which imparts pulsations on the suction head. Thereby, the inclined bristles are bent and straightened repetitively, resulting in a forward thrust moving the suction head over the surface to be cleaned. At least one foot is disposed in the housing which is cyclically displaced vertically by a driving mechanism driven by the movement of the vibratory element and returned by return springs. Said foot cyclically lifts off the suction head at one side, resulting in a rotational movement of the suction head about a vertical axis so as to change the direction of forward movement of the suction head.

Abstract: An in-line leaf trap captures the leaves and debris that are gathered by a manual or automatic suction-type swimming pool cleaner before they can enter the swimming pool's water filtering system. The leaf trap is placed in-line with the flexible hose that conducts the leaves and debris between the pool cleaner and the poolside suction connection. The in-line leaf trap is a two-piece closed container having inside a removable or integrated perforated or mesh screen debris basket. The body of the trap has two cylindrical tapered openings to mate with commonly used swimming pool cleaner hoses. The openings are oriented to ensure proper flow direction through the trap. The device floats in the pool with its top section just above the water line. The flexible hose is held floating just under the top surface of the water. By the use of flotation and ballast materials, the trap maintains a vertical operating position, with its body seal held below the water line, after being placed in that position by the pool owner or maintainer. The transparent material used in making the in-line leaf trap permits one to see when the basket is filled. Preferably, the lower body, with the attached or integral basket, is separated from the upper body and the leaves and debris are dumped out and disposed. The unit is then rejoined for further use in the pool cleaning system.
