An X-ray generation apparatus has a housing comprising an evacuated envelope with a rotatable anode target surrounded by an all metal grounded exterior structure and a cooling system. The cooling system comprises a coolant circulating system with heat exchanger and means for circulating a fluid coolant through an interior of the X-ray generating apparatus; a hollow shield structure with center aperture for passing and electron beam; and a cooling block which is disposed proximate to the rotatable anode target and comprises a disk with a plurality of concentric annular channels formed by concentric annular partitions. The shield structure and the disk of the cooling block are made of thermally conductive material. An interior of the shield structure is filled with structures such as pins, fins or pack bed which are made of thermally conductive materials. The fluid coolant is circulated through the shield structure, then into the plurality of channels of the cooling block and via an interior of the housing to the heat exchanger for efficient cooling of the X-ray generating apparatus.

Liquid metal containment in an x-ray tube. In one example embodiment, an x-ray tube anode assembly includes a stationary shaft terminated by a head and an anode connected to an anode hub. The anode hub is at least partially surrounding the head of the stationary shaft. The anode hub defines a hub opening through which the stationary shaft extends. The anode hub is configured to contain a volume of a liquid metal and to rotate around the stationary shaft. The anode hub also defines a catch space within the anode hub that is configured to catch the liquid metal in order to contain the liquid metal within the hub regardless of the orientation of the x-ray tube anode assembly.

An integral cathode for use with x-ray devices. The integral cathode includes an emitter made of a refractory metal such as tungsten, preferably doped with rhenium to afford malleability during construction and assembly. The integral cathode also includes a support cartridge, preferably composed of an electrically non-conductive material such as ceramic, in which the emitter is received. The support cartridge electrically isolates the cathode from the other components and structures of the x-ray device. Additionally, the support cartridge serves to impose, and maintain, a parabolic curve in the emitter. The parabolic form of the emitter naturally shapes an electron beam by causing electrons discharged from the emitter to converge at a focal spot. In this way, both the emission and focusing functions of the cathode are integrated and performed by a single part.

An X-ray tube of a rotating anode type for reducing acoustic noise and vibration by using an isolating structure which suppresses and prevents transmission of the vibrational energy from the rotating anode assembly to a vacuum envelope and a housing of the X-ray tube. The isolating structure comprises at least one flexible member which is connected between a support structure of the the anode assembly and a neck portion of the vacuum envelope forming a hermetical sealing therewith, and symmetrically disposed isolating members placed between the neck and head portions of the vacuum envelope and the housing, respectively. The flexible members of the isolating structure can be incorporated into the walls of the vacuum envelope.
