A reference frame picture index is determined based on display order information for the multiple reference frame pictures. The method further includes obtaining first motion vector information and second motion vector information for the macroblock and obtaining a first reference field picture index and a second reference field picture index associated with the macroblock. First and second reference frame pictures are determined. First and second reference field pictures are selected. The macroblock is decoded based on the first and second motion vector information and the selected first and second reference field pictures.
