A granulated fatty alcohol sulphate is characterized by a bulk density greater than 600 g/lit when no consolidation stress is imparted, it has a particle size-distribution such that at least 15% of the particles are larger than 1000 .mu.m, and less than 10% of the particles are smaller than 250 .mu.m, and has a bulk density which is dependent on the consolidation stress in the range 200 kg/cm.sup.2 to at least 750 kg/cm.sup.2.
