The optical recording layer is then selectively irradiated with an energy beam to form therein a tracking region for guiding a laser beam for recording and reproduction. The tracking region is free of unevenness and has an optical characteristic different from that of the portion of the optical recording constituting a data recording region which has not been irradiated with the laser beam.
