Apparatus for assisting the loading of a rigid sheet, such as a glass sheet, into gripping engagement with a plurality of selfclosing tongs includes a stabilizing device which inhibits tong oscillation and provides a guide surface for the upper edge of the sheet during loading of the tongs. The stabilizing device is moved away from the loaded tongs at the end of the loading operation and vice versa.
