1. A SOLID LUBRICANT COMPOSITION COMPRISING A NONBRITTLE, PARTIALLY CARBONIZED ORGANIC POLYMER WHICH HAS BEEN CURED AND PYROLYZED TO A GLASSLIKE CARBON, AND PARTICULATE, SOLID PHASE LUBRICATING PIGMENTS DISPERSED THROUGHOUT, THE WEIGHT RATIO OF THE LUBRICATING PIGMENTS TO THE NONBRITTLE, PARTIALLY CARBONIZED POLYMER BEING SUCH AS TO PROVIDE SAID COMPOSITION WITH A RELATIVELY LOW FRICTION COEFFICIENT AND LONG WEAR LIFE, SAID NON-BRITTLE, PARTIALLY CARBONIZED POLYMER HAVING BEEN FORMED BY CURING SAID POLYMER ADMIXED WITH SAID LUBRICATING PIGMENTS TO AN INFUSIBLE, CROSS-LINKED STATE, AND THEN PYROLIZING THE CURED ADMIXTURE BY HEATING THE SAME TO TEMPERATURE ABOVE THE CURING TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF FROM APPROXIMATELY 300* C. TO 1000*C. FOR A PERIOD OF AT LEAST ABOUT THREE HOURS AND SUFFICIENT TO CAUSE PARTIAL CARBONIZATION OF THE POLYMER AND CONVERSION TO A GLASSLIKE CARBON.
