A computer-implemented method may include receiving an identifier of a video hosted by a content hosting platform from an external platform, the video being requested by a first user of the external platform, the first user having a first user account with the external platform. The method may also include determining that the video identifier comprises an attribution tag, and determining that the video was previously shared with the first user by a second user via the content hosting platform by analyzing the attribution tag, the second user having a second user account with the content hosting platform. The method may further include storing a record of the second user's sharing of the video with the first user in a data store of the content hosting platform.
